Hi all,
I am looking at putting a EA81/82 into a Morris Minor for something different.
I am trying to find out if it is possible to fit a toyota 5spd or similar behind it.
Any info would be helpful.

Why do want a toyota 5 speed? You can get subaru 5 speeds for it???

subaru 5 speed would make it transaxle and put the engine in the back seat
the EA81 would be the best i reacon, just for fun but would they fit? cause the engines are really wide. we were going to put an EJ25 in a clkumban type caar but found it was too wide for the the aero dynamics to be right.
id suggest either the toyota corrola 5 speed and some diff..... cant really help
were are putting an alfa motor into a morris minor or austin a30 somthing older like that and putting the subaru 5 speed in the rear for weight balance GTR style =)

Matt,Spike,
thanks for your reply.
The Morris was originally designed for a flat 4 but the engine was never developed due to wartime shortages, so they made do with the 918cc flat-head in-line 4.
I thought it would be cool to put a flat 4 in, I have thought it out but am stuck on the gearbox. I thought about doing a RWD conversion on a subaru box but, correct me if I am wrong, the subaru has a IRS set-up and that is getting to complicated.
The other thing I need is some basic measurements of the engine:
width x depth x height.
Also what is the reccomendation from you guys on here, EA81 VS EA82.
I was wanting EFI and Elec Ignition for the engine

i didnt know that =/ lols
by RWD you mean fitting the subaru transaxle in the front and putting a diff in the back? or putting the transaxle in the back like we are doing?
i have an engine out underneath the car port, if i remmeber i will try and measure it tommorow (somone might have detasils though) try wikipedia though
if you want fuel injection youd have to go EA82, or modified EA81 or id suggest getting somthing like an EJ16 or 18

I'm not to sure on the Subaru set up eg. trans-axle/rear diff/trans-axle any pics you could show me so I am on the same page would be good.
I have tried wiki for the dimensions but no luck.
Dose the OHC of the EA82 make it wider than the EA81?

a moris minor with a boxer rumble an interesting thought.
Yes the EA82 is wider than the EA81 because of the over head cam. the Ej16, EJ18, EJ22 and the early EJ20 single cam, are all the same length and shorter than the EA82 not much but shorter. The EJ motors are injected (of course) newer and easier to get a hold of and can come with computer and harness.
if you got an EA single range part time box (4 or 5 speed) you could keep it in 4WD permanently and have a rear wheel drive box. (way cheaper than modifying an EJ box) then if you used an EJ motor you could use an adaptor plate to mate the motor and box together.

I had the dubious privilege of owning a 49 side valve low-lite as my first car. A big issue would be the lack of strengh in the sub rails where the torsion bars mount.(copied still by jap suv's). Also the neanderthal suspension , which survived into the seventies on some models. But the idea of a locked
4wd box sounds good.

Now what really would be 'interesting' would be if you could squeeze in a
EJ20t or similar AND keep the install covert to create the ultimate sleeper!
Alas I doubt it would fit
I would imagine a well prepared EA81 in a moggie thou would itself be a bit of a hot rod and would shock a few people !
Keep us all posted on your intentions please !

Hi,
My biggest concern atm is the size of the engine, mainly width between shock towers, and depth from rediator to firewall. If anyone could give me basic measurements then I'll know if it will fit or not.

I have just done a quick measurement (very quick) of my EJ22.
70cm from rocker cover to rocker cover
60cm from sump to top of inlet manfold at highest point (not including carby but would take into account of throttle body hight if my engine had a computer)
45cm from bell housing to front pulley
all of these measurements are a quick approximation done whilst my very young daughter screamed for me to come back inside.

OK,
now I know it will fit, tight but tight is good.
Morris between guards 78cm, rad to firewall 48cm but can get a litttle more out of notching the firewall crossmember, depth is not a prob with the big bonnet.
Only snag is the g/box now. This has been suggested:
Sure, anything is possible....at a price. I can make up adaptor plates and custom flywheels and clutches from billet. But the cost will scare you.
Why would you want to bolt a Toyota 5speed box behind an EA Subie engine when you have a perfectly good range of Subie 5 speed boxes to use?
Just take the front differential out of the front of the subie 5 speed and plus up the two holes where the two fwd shafts were. There are plenty of kits available that allow you to replace the centre differential with a machined sleeve that makes it RWD.
Has anyone done this? Can anyone recommend a kit to do so?
Dose the subie use a torque tube or conventional driveshaft to get the power to the rear diff? ie. how would I connect the subie box to a leaf sprung rear diff?

the AWD to RWD conversion has been done many times

look at alpine ravens
EJ Dual Range AWD 1.19:1 Lo range upgrade to 1.59 to get an idea of what the box internals look like
as for connecting the diff up a modified subaru to morris minor tailshaft would make the connection and cost a fortune as well.
Im thinking tramp bars to stop the rear end from shimmying itself to death everytime you let the clutch out.

There is a thread on the USMB about fabricating a bellhousing to adapt a Toyota W series gearbox to a Subaru engine. It may be of some interest:

Wow that is awesome, I might line up for one of those. W55 is shorter than the subie box so the shifter won't be under my elbow. just need to compare the cost to RWD conversion of subie box.

What a truly epic project!!

Sorry lads, this thread is dead.
had a good look at a subie engine today and the starter is in the wrong place. It would need to go right through the firewall crossmember, a little more involved than I wanted.
Also the minister for war said a declaration would be issued if I persisted.
Thanks for your time and thanks for your help.

A neighbour used to have a Morris 1000 ute running a datsun 1400 cc twin carb jap import race engine mated to 120Y box and diff. The conversion was not complete as speedo was never hooked up. One day on a straight stretch after a set of lights at a quiet time he had a run with a motor bike - bike dropped off after a while. Some weeks later Russell was caught up by the bike rider somewhere who asked if he was driving that day. Rider told him he backed off at 140 kph due to 80 speed limit

Both were impressed
