Hey guys,

I'm running an EA81 twin carb setup on my L series wagon and am looking for a new air intake setup.

Does anyone know if you can get aftermarket airfilters to fit the 60mm throat of the hitachi carbie?

I was thinking somethink like this to fit side by side but I can't find them the right size.

it will be difficult to find aftermarket products to fit you could buy something like that and modify the base so it fits on.

or make an air box for the carbys and plumb it to an air box from a later model subaru then to a snorkel

yep, thats what i've already got. Sorry, I should have explained my reasoning in the first post. I've used the base of the factory twin carb air cleaner and built a custom box around that with a 3" inlet at the back with a pod filter. This can be extended later to fit a snorkel but its plenty high enough now for the water crossings I intend on doing.

The problem is, I didn't really think of the acoustics that a custom airbox like this might create, and at certain speeds/revs it creates and awful resonating drone. Now i've just put up with it but it makes it a bit annoying on long drives and reality is that this car is my daily driver and doesn't go offroad very often, let alone through water crossings.

So, I was thinking I could get a standard style air filter for everyday driving and if I was going away for a weekend or something 4wdriving it'd only be 2 wingnuts to put the airbox back on again.

So just looking to see whats out there and what others have used on hitachis.

Its dark now but i'll try get some pics of the airbox tomorrow.

id stick with what youve got, the style is the best around though for what your doing.
im going to build one for the BAJA, plenum style
maybe build a new airbox?

depending on how high you can go plumb one or two of the standard single carb aircleaners on top?

I use LPG with my twins but you may be interested to know that 50 x 100 SHS sits nicely atop the twins clearing the bonnet. I made holes to suit the carbs with gasket. The top side is a little complex to explain. I made 12mm? holes lining up with hold down studs. If you know rod nuts or join nuts in M6, I cut them down and welded a bigger washer on its top, one for each carb. The join nut winds down into hole on stud with washer sealing on top of 50x100 box , o ring under to seal and anti undo. You could duct off the end or both ends to whatever box you wish for air filter muffling

I'd rather not build/modify a new airbox at this stage but thanks for the tips. i was just wondering if anyone knew of an aftermarket airfilter that would fit on the hitachis as an off the shelf product.

How hard is it to com across the twin carbies for the ea 81?

Hrmm and the chances of fitting a second Weber isn't an option. Any chance of a bigger aftermarket carb? As I haven't the foggiest how they connect/work with the engine. Been brought up on nothing but efi.. Back to googling I think

you can try the weber ADM34 if you want to drown an EA81 or EA82 or look at the weber 38 which quite a few people use instead of the weber 32/36.

now back on topic thats one hefty airbox, have you thought about plumbing the pod out of the engine bay and into the space above the tyre in the wheel well.

In all honesty I do not think anything generic is gonna be available for these babies at all. So rare in first place and not many cars ran twins - Ford Laser about KA did a pair of twins in an S ? Nice air box mod using air box base. I use a V6 Commode air box sit where jack was and duct air to the air box passing through a gas carb on the way. No induction noise at all. Have removed indickator lower and old original hole feeds cooler air to air box inlet.

had a look at that ryco site. It seems the only sell the filters themselves, not the whole assemby.


Doesn't have to be especially for a hitachi twin carb setup. I would have thought other manufacturers would have used carbies with a 60mm throat. Must not be a very common size.

Apparantly i can get a rectangular filter with blank base and just cut my own hole to whatever size I want. That might be the go.

2 1/2" though, would be better in a 2 1/4...

ended up going with the redline rectangular filter with a blank base and cut my own hole out.

The twins absolutely scream with this much air flow. Sounds awsome

and i've even got room for a spare under the bonnet now too! bonus.

Digging up an old thread here but, I think it belongs here. Fitted the twin carb to the EA81 today. I used a series 1000 Ramflo filter (1000 CFM). I think it looks cool and I'm happy with the result.

I see it, Its from my "Toys" album in my profile, normaly Steptoe can't see my pics.
