Trailer for a Subaru Outback

Post by TrevorC » Mon Jan 24, 2011 8:42 pm

Hi,

This is my first post. Recently puchased a 2006 Subaru Outback and are now looking for a suitable trailer. I guess any 6 by 4 would be OK. Uses will include occasional rubbish to the tip, picking up soil or mulch and carrying camping gear.

Is it possible to have a trailer built using the same 16" wheels as are on the vehicle? If so is this a good idea?

Any suggestions or comments would be welcome.

Trevor

6x4 will be a good honest trailer for your needs

Opt for the heavier duty models.

I see you are in SA, Treg have a long tradition of building very high quality trailers that last a lifetime, I myself have 20+ year old Modern trailer that is very good.

Either of these companies can build an axle to your stud pattern.

I was told that the larger hubs were needed to do the 4 stud subie pattern = cost more, and not just a bit more. I guess it is cheaper to order with the subie pattern and supply your own wheels before they set the axle length to suit all clearances inner and outer of the wheel tyre combo.

I went for the 7x4 heavy duty five leaf spring jobbie, Falcon hub stud pattern as Falcon studs are thicker I am told/shown.

I figure Sub 5 stud different PCD to Holcon, is gonna be larger hub? Pays to ask first before ordering. They keep trailer prices as low as we will pay and to do so use common as Holcon stud choices for used rims and tyres.

I converted my camper trailer over to Subaru hubs to match the 2004 outback. 5x100 pcd holden bearings. I ordered these from All State Trailer Spares, your will need to verify the bearings on the axle aswell I think the 39mm axle uses holden bearings and larger axles use Ford bearings.

SVX is 5x114.3, i would never have thought it was the same as Falcon

But SVX wheels arent much good if you are driving any other Subaru.

Subaru wheels for a trailer

Post by TrevorC » Tue Jan 25, 2011 9:11 pm

Thanks for all the helpfull feedback folks - yeh, I'm really looking at options for the same rims & tyres on a trailer so my spare(s) would suit either the vehicle or trailer if necessary.

That's right Spike it was so that we had two spares. Unfortunately the wife rolled the 04 Outback and we have replaced it with a gq patrol and a Disiel I30 wagon.

ahhh dammit

still got the outback??

well yeah guess it doenst make any difference now but were making some new hubs for my uncles trailer, hes going from adelaide to bathurst and last thing he wants (or my aunty) is to have a puncture on the trailer with 1 spare for it, or the car with only one spare.
it will be possible to have two blow outs and have the 2 spares for bother car and trailer

No the wife rolled it doing 65kms/hrs on Mullwoolonbah - Kyogle Rd near Nymbin on the way to lismore. The road was wet , negitive camber when it started fish tailing and nose ended in the ditch causing it roll along the embankment ended on its top. Total right-off. Wife and baby OK but Outback did not survive. We were deperate for transportation so we bought Dad's GQ while waiting for the Outback to be finalised, then replaced it with the I30 crd as the daily runner, Automatic Turbo Diesel can't wait for Subaru to bring out a Automatic Turbo Diesel, I am not holding my breath as I think hell may freeze over first. (Wife can only drive automatics)
