chances are they wont snap, bend a little and thus make the roof racks unable to grip.
the roofs them selves are able to take a remarkable amount of weight, they are designed to atleast cushion the fall if you land on its roof hence why you can use roof top tents and such, but when you get to L series the roofs are a lot weaker i think i doubt mine would hold a roof top tent with 2 people inside and i know mums has a large dent in it where somone walked over it in the city (PSI and all that stuff taken into account)

When looking at roof loadings on the guttering, remember that you're not going to use just the usual two roof racks to hold all the weight - this is where you use another matching roof rack or two so that the load is spread around. Roof racks have load limits - and I'd reckon they're less than the guttering seam...

Thats pretty impressive. Once i pickup some non over-expensive racks that arent 10million times wider than the car itself ill be putting the spare wheel and some equipment on there.
A roof top tent now sounds like a good idea since they can take it.
Thanks all!

As long as you spread the weight over many points along the gutter, you wont have an issue but I wouldn't put more than 300kg up there. Remember the old centre of gravity
As for the L.Series vs M.Y. I don't see much difference in either one. they both have the same roof design structurally. My best mate drove across Aus with his roof top camper on his L and no issues.

Yeah I wouldn't be trying to sleep up there with the other half while driving

Centre of gravity shouldn't be an issue while standing still unless you're trying to camp on a very steep hill - that'd make for one uncomfortable sleep!

Hahaha, yeah thats not gunna happen, i dont have power steering
Ive ordered a pair of racks that should fill my needs for the moment. Is it just me or are they that hard to source? and a bit on the pricy side aswell...

Nope.. it's not you.. they are very hard to find and people ask crazy money because of it but keep your eyes pealed.. they do come up from time to time. I know it will be hard but I'd put 3 or 4 bars on the car to spread the load, especially if they are the plastic end type.

Yup they're the plastic end type unfortunatly...i shall be putting a third one on if i put jerry can's or what not up there, the bars ive ordered through repco will be able to take 75kg per bar so im sure they can handle a spare wheel and a bit of recovery gear, the basket will be a small one anyway, so the bars will be pretty close together.

When I was checking roof tents a few weeks ago most of the later Subi's were rated at carrying a 70kg load traveling maximum and 4 times that stationary so 280kg, so if the gear is 70kg, you're 80kg & your Mrs is 130 kg you'll either be safe or end up with a gear stick up your arse lol.

Awesome, apart from the gear stick part haha. All thats needed is a couple more rack rails.
