A group of us are working on a fabrication project in the United States placing Subaru H6 3.0 engines into VW Vanagons. There is a lot of mixing and matching parts to solve clearance problems, and it would be helpful to look at a parts catalog from the rest of the world (but in English ) to see if there might be parts unavailable in the US that could help us out.

For instance, we are having problems fitting the US H6 starter into a bellhousing; all H6 sold in the US are automatic, but we are wondering if there is a different starter designated when the engines are sold with a manual transmission in the rest of the world. This is just an example.

In the VW world we have what we call an EKTA, a CD or downloadable file that diagrams the various assemblies for the entire vehicle, and shows the alternate parts and relevant part numbers. Typically these were used at the parts desk in a dealership, but they have been available -if you know where to look_ publicly for some time. Does such a thing exist for Subarus, and how could I get a hold of one.

welcome Tom F. thats rather ambitious, are you going to have rear wheel steering as I can see the Vanagon aka transporter aka combi aka Kombi wheel standing everywhere it goes not from weight but the engine power

the manual gearboxes have 2 different starters available a direct drive and a reduction drive, pretty much the same size as the automatic starters. the only difference really is where the manual starter bolts up to the gearbox the flange that gets inserted to the gearbox is smaller. (the hole for the starter on the manual gearbox is smaller)

it may have information on a starter you could use

(have you thought about the starter from a small block V8 or V6 GM, ford, toyota or nissan motor)

I like http://opposedforces.com/parts/ - but don't take the part numbers as gospel, use them more like a guide.

the factory software you are looking for is called "subaru fast". its a pain in the ass to get working properly though.

I forgot to mention yesterday that the H6 engine was only shipped with an auto box in Australia as well.

as for Subaru Fast I found a set of links for a Russian version for the late 90's models

P.S. The USA parts manual is known as Subaru Usa ProQuest from what I can see on the net.

This might be of help, I ran across this outfit when considering subi powering my vw westy van.
