Um, in experimenting could you use a 35A, then 40A and a 45A FL in series in a circuit to protect stuff and if it blows you'd work out a suitable A size ?

Jono, with the 3 different fuses in series, the 35A will always blow first.

Nev, the 1.25 fusible link only protects the alternator from the battery in the case of a short in that wire or in the alternator itself.
But in reality, how often do these FL's cause issues? We know Jono had issues with his, and I can recall one other instance where one has blown, but its rather uncommon

Yeah, I dont think it's just for the Alt aye, I had one go on me the other day, nearly left me stranded at a shopping center - no power to the car. I managed to fiddle with it to get it home, but it was arcing and it was well & truly burnt out when I got it home. Judging by the 3 new ones that were in the glovebox of the silver RX when I bought it, they are a common thing to go...

All the EJ diagrams show it feeding the IGN switch... so yeah, pretty important link...

Well after weighing-up all the above information in this thread from the Nissan sources, Narva's link wire info and Gannon's research I decided to swap them colour-for-Narva colour (I believe some brands differ but this is something I was told, not saw)

Image

I had to order the Red,50a as no one stocked them, Repco, Autobarn, Super cheap auto. Anyway, I've had them in for about a month now with zero noticable difference to the wire links. They look good, the fusebox lid closes, Im happy.

They are around $6 ea from Autobarn, the red one is available, just get your chosen supplier to order it.

I'd say it's a very common problem as well. Nearly everyone with a lseries over here had issues.

Look neat and tidy, but if we have screwed up in the guessing, is it worth it to lose your Vortex in a puff of smoke ?

I can get a squizz at the Narva catalogue sometime, take some pics.
Aren't the originals three of one colour and you've upped to the red one?

This might be where one of those clamp meters $30 on ebay might help measure working loads ?

?
Green, Red, Green, Black is what's listed on fusible link box lid and the WSM,
Mine had Green, Green, Green, Black indicating one had been swapped at one point, perhaps because the greens are more common, being 2 inevery car, not 1...

For me - yep :D "It's only wiring!"

Mine too has Green, Green, Green, Black from factory - so I've replaced the same and all is going well so far! I'd actually forgotten that I'd swapped all the fusible links out for this newer type of fuse :D

I might have to look into the red fuse to swap so it's all mickey mouse ;)

Red might be Vortex specific

Xt and L share the same fusible link box lid.

Was looking at my GLTM5's FL box last night, being an 85 model may be th difference, has one black 1.25 and three green 0.5 listed on the brown FL box cover. May be an 87 or mpfi thing to have one red, two greens ??

Oh, and a pic of the FL that caused me all my grief in Sept 2009

you know that a plug in fuse could fail in the same way if a high resistance joint formed on the spade terminal.

:o You know, when ya think about things 'they' wouldn't make fusible links like the FFL boxes we are talking about, wouldn't make them so they actually fitted the FL boxes, and not just one in and the wire FL's, the whole lot fit in just ever so neatly and colour match as well.

We have found that different shaped and sized FL boxes available, or in use in EJ models etc are not the same colour for same rating. Surely not just a fluke ......shame no one has found those that fit are just a superceded version

If only we could get to the nitty gritty detail of the wires used in cars running exactly the same rated FFL's we want to use. Need to ID the cars that use them, and hope to find the detail same as that Subaru included in their manuals !

Because, it looks like to use black for black could see those using an 80A rated whre Gannons calcs come out as to use the green 40A !
