Fuel Consumption

Post by jimmeh14 » Wed Nov 03, 2010 9:01 am

Hey all :)
I want an opinion or if someone actually knows statistics.
My Liberty '95 goes through fuel like theres no tomorrow.
I fill the tank right up with $50 or so then 4 days later ( about 250-300ks) i have to put in another $20 and thats just enough to last me until the week after.
And to top it all off, my fuel level sensor is dodgy so i have to estimate how much fuel i have.
Could there be something wrong with the engine? fuel leak?
help :(

could there be some lead in your right foot?

and what are you paying a litre for fuel?

what you need to do is record the litres you buy then the total kilometres you travel

then divide litres by kms and times 100

for example from 50 litres you get 550 km

so divide 50 by 550 the times by 100

and get around 9.09 litres per 100 km

which is around what my 92 liberty gets and it is a AWD auto (hwy use)

hope this helps

Sometimes i accelerate a little higher than usual, but I don't thrash it all the time. (mines a manual)
Well today i paid 122c/L which is pretty high but i usually pay around 112c/L.
Last week i put in 43L and I barely managed to do 300ks, which is about 14.3L per 100 km and thats extremely bad!

O2 sensors are in the loop to keep fuel mixture correct. If these drop off in theirjob fuel consumptin can go up and tell tale is black fumy exhaust. Some have found no real change in consumption with the bugger disconnected though.

Do a tune up with new plugs air filter and subies intake cleaner foam stuff in pressure can $17

The litres per hundred figures are what you need to communicate with everyone please :)

Okay, so an update on this thread.
For the past month i've been putting in 30L of vortex 95.
From 30L i only get about 250ks.
Good/bad? What can i do to increase fuel consumption?

These don't always throw a code either! Worth the near $100.00 to get a new one and install it.

I was waiting for that Jonno! I bet you shuddered when you read that "I'm only getting 250kms to a tank"!

Be the judge yourself, if you think you are gettin an unreasonable fuel economy, Say worse than 11L/100Ks Hway, and u seem to think ur getting roughly 12L/100Ks
Im guessing you have the EJ25D DOHC non turbo model?
if so , im sure you have no valve adjustments to worry about, so stick with the electronics as the root cause of the problem.
Take it in to your nearest "subaru service centre" (Not a subaru outlet) on a quiet day and wal in there liek u have money, and say, "HI can you please check the ECU (Fuel computer) for current faults or historical codes please"
They will take your car round the back adn plug there diagnostics computer in, better than any computer available at an auto store or ultratune or anything like that.
They knwo how to find whats wrong and they want to, coz they want ur money, electronci fuel injection systems are absed on expensive parts.
when they tell you wots wrong, say "KTHNXBAI" and get outa there and ring your nearest suabru parts centre (there are places which specialise in Subaru parts, but aren't subaru specific, these are the ppl you want to order parts from)
My guess in order of suspect is that you had either, bad MAF sensor, bad 02 sensor, or else a worn out engine (cam lobes and or compression rings)
