ok duno the son in law rang me today. there the ones we bought the other forri for . he was talking to a suberu specialest about fuel econamy recons he should be geting 500 ks to a tank hes only geting 400. i neva know i just stik it in. so this blokes told him to fill it with good 98 ron fuel i supose run it for a wile then disconect the battery for the nite . seems the ecu could remember the old fuel and keep it runing to that . and leaving the batrie of over nite jogs it back to the good fuel .

the computer is adjusted to who ever has been driving the car it has created a "map" of the driving style
yes by all means try this but when the car is started (after the battery has been disconnected then reconnected) don't touch the accelerator before you start or after you start.
Ive been told to wait 45 seconds to a minute once the car has started before using the accelerator
why? I was told it resets the idle mixture and starts a new "map"

this kind of thing is usually just wishful thinking. the ECU constantly learns and adjusts to all sorts of factors including the quality of fuel. Give it a go, I doubt it does anything.
Most likely it is due to driving style.
Let somebody else drive the car for a week, chances are it will get an entirely different return. With Subaru's driving style makes a massive difference to economy.

In 2004 I was commuting Melb - Castlemaine, about 1,600km / week.
When driving auto XF Falcon 'premium' fuel was more economical.
Was also driving the same route regularly in my 1600 Beetle on 'regular' unleaded (rebuilt engine with hardened valve seats). Being a 1967 'Custom' model it had no fuel gauge, just the reserve tap on the floor. So I didn't run out of fuel I would fill up every second day.
Drove the same route every day, virtually all open highway at '62.5 MPH'.
Fitted a Hyclone to the throat of the Beetle carburettor, after which I regularly got 10% better fuel economy.

I know little -read nothing - about maps and ECU's learning for future reference, but I do know the AFM, O2 sensor and knock sensor are constantly working to keep economy to the maximum. With better RON fuel I can see engine gets max timing advance possible for every 1/10th of a second or so, the claims of disconnect to remap ECU sounds like phooey to me.
