Setting timing

I have a 1989 Subaru Brumby EA81 electronic dizzy. Took out distributor and did not mark rotor position (silly me). I have set flywheel to top dead centre and located dizzy rotor on number 1 plug lead. Won't start. I remove dizzy cap and check flywheel to TDC and notice the rotor is now 180 degrees opposite to what I set before.

What is happening? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Tozzy

Pull no 1 sparkplug out and make sure it is top dead centre on the right cylinder, you are at TDC but on the wrong cylinder 180 degrees out.
You could just try pulling the dissy and rotating the rotor button 180 degrees as well.
The most accurate way is to pull the rocker cover of no 1 bank and watch the inlet valve open and close as the correct tdc will follow about 60 degrees after the inlet valve shuts.

should also be marks on removed dizzy with a dimple on drive cog. align these when installing. I have forgotten with EA81 but possible that the fly not meant to be on TDC but on the timing of 8 DBTDC whe you drop dizzy in on no 1 cyl, as was case with old Mazda donks

I agree with Steptoe, just line it up roughly with number 1 piston at TDC. Also pull the plug and make sure number on is at TDC, by putting something down the hole, ie screwdriver.

remeber that your dizzy is on a corkscew cog so when you put the dizzy back in and it contacts the drive gear on the big end it will move as it goes into place so even if you are at top dead centre the rotor moves forward and the timing will be out.

so when you put the dizzy back in the rotor must be turned back from where it is meant to be when it is finally seated

LEGO :) I was in my thirties when I happily parted with my own LEGO collection to keep the next generation of builders going. One of the kids even has original grey tyres from mid to late sixties stll in use !! Rego might knock them back for perish marks in the side walls...
