Post by Venom » Fri Apr 09, 2010 8:51 am

Hey guys,

There is a dual range Impreza RV at my local wreckers and i was wondering how i could tell if it was a 1.5 low range ration model?

Cheers,
Rhys

June 98 Impreza sportswagon, not RV. Transmission code TY752XR6AB

Is there any way to look up the transmission number? I've had no luck on the internet.

Cheers,
Rhys

I had a 98 Impreza 2L Sportswagon for a short time & only ever stuck it in low once just to see what it was like, bloody high gearing from memory & felt like it wouldn't have done 70kph in 5th but have no idea what the ratio's were.

Yeah Rhys, I'd be pulling it anyway, you need a dual range box

I always thought that the impreza boxes were the 1.4something to 1 low range, with is bloody better than the 1.19:1 standard in everything else that's EJ and dual range...

Is there actually a way to check based on the transmission number with Subaru or am i wasting my time with that? I'm really having zero luck using the number with the information available on the internet.

I'll go back and have a look at the car (again), and see what price they want for the box. I guess if its not 1.5whatever then i'll just need a L series low range.

Cheers,
Rhys

Perhaps if you write down the VIN and then give that to Subaru, they might be able to tell you what was spec on that particular model???

There might be a part of that serial on the transmission that could help you out... but I think if that tranny was standard with the car then subaru should be able to tell you what ratio box came with that VIN.

I've found the parts bloke at the frankston subaru pretty good, try him at 9786 6900.

Good luck and let us know if it works out!

Cheers,
Owen.

Ive done that kind of thing - they were useless (as they couldnt tell me specific answer (low range) but give it a go tho..

Subaru are useless and have no information on this kind of thing. Wreckers aren't much better. I'm not in a rush to put a dual range in my car so i'd like to take the time and pick the right one. I'm not keen on putting in an impreza box to find the ratios won't suit. I find it hard to believe there can be 3 or 4 transmission charts but no one knows anything about these?

Oh yeah they are... you gotta push them (if they are nice enough to let you look at thier books) but you wont be able to get complete information, they dont know what ratios that gearbox if you give them the gearbox number, its really annoying...

Charts i have found so far...

http://www.northursalia.com/techdocs/tr ... chart.html

http://www.gearhack.com/myink/ViewPage. ... on%20Chart

http://members.iinet.net.au/~wearne/Sub ... 0Specs.pdf

Not one dual range on any of them.

Found a little hint of information on NASIOC referring to what the transmission code means, but it doesn't describe all possibilities... just ends in etc.

Code i am looking at is.. TY752XR6AB. T = transmission, easy. Y is manual gearbox. 75 is the gearshaft spacing. 2 is for 4-bolt impreza 5speeds. X is for transmission specification, no idea. R6AB indicates things like front diff and minor production changes, but no info on exactly what they indicate.

WITHOUT SOUNDING PRESUMPTUOUS

Pretty sure your info you have found on google isn't true, as the GF8 refers to the EJ20 turbo variant and these were not available with the dual range gearboxes. GF6 (EJ18 & EJ20 NA) were available with the dual range gearbox in the "Sportswagon" model.

I have a copy somewhere of the AUDM FSM for the gen1 (GC/GF) Impreza but since I moved from Kelmscott, I've not been able to locate any of my manuals.

As for the original poster (8 years ago :???: ) the info you were chasing would have been 1:1.447 ratio

I always thought that presumptuous was your middle name ;)

so this line Impreza "1st Gen GF8 1992-2000", should read Impreza "1st Gen GF6 1992-2000". I got the vin number and other information from a wreckers website, as for its accuracy NFI.

However a Subaru dealership has confirmed this box TY752XR6AB is 3.9 final range with 1:1.447 low range ratio.

I thought it was carmella?

Would never post info from a wreckers page.. asking for trouble there.

And I wouldn't have posted the ratio if it wasn't correct

So what vehicles do those transmissions belong to? I always thought it was only the late 90s 2L Impreza sportswagon that had the "good" low range.

Been half contemplating putting a diesel in my touring wagon project, but they only came with a single range 6 speed. Might need a bit of screwing around with gear or diff ratios, etc if going to put a petrol trans behind it.

US sites are useless for this kind of info. They barely got any dual range L series, let alone anything newer
