MY touring wagon speedo

My MY touring wagon has an occasional speedo problem.
The problem is not there in the morning when the weather is cooler but sometimes of an afternoon when the weather is hot and I drive the car the speedo is basically showing double speed on the needle. For instance at about 1800 rpm on the tacho the speedo should be showing 60 k's/hr but instead is showing 120 k's/hr. At about 3200 rpm instead of 100k's/hr it is off the end of the speedo at about 190 to 200k's/hr.
I am guessing with a stock EA81, standard suspension etc I would notice if I was actually doing "warp" speed so does anyone have any idea what the issue may be. I have tried changing the speedo cable but no difference. Failing this I need to find a new speedo for an 1982 touring wagon (not digital)

What diff are you running?! (misquote for my own amusement)

Seriously though, sounds like a bug in the instrument panel - for a car of this age, easiest option is to swap it out with a 2nd hand unit (20 min job at best)

If that one does the same, then chase loom faults starting with E

Did the same albeit with a digital dash (cost $35) - was too easy and not worth the time trouble shooting

Yes, I probably will have to pull the dash (hate doing that, pain) but I will start by checking all connections on the rear of the panel before trying to find a new speedo.
Its only got 245 thousand k's on it.
Actually, I am getting used to driving off the tacho of an afternoon.
P.S. the diff is a 3.7
