i think the Subaru Baja is being referred to Basically an Outback with a multi-function ute tray. Subaru Oz were very close to importing, but management did not think there was a market for them. How wrong were they !!

Nah Subaru Baja, They werent imported to australia unless they're private import, most of them went to America, they were based on Gen 3 outback.

You do realise that it is left hand drive and will have to be converted to right hand drive. But with locally available RHD parts, this shouldnt pose to much of a problem

If you get 3rd gen RHS Liberty or Outback dash, steering rank, etc then you wouldnt have a problem. There are wreckers available to supply the dash etc..

yeah i dont remember them being called by that name.
we were looking at going into buisness with a loccal wrekers to building or importing them.
think we were calling them scrat or somthing along the lines on brat.

right you were looking to import a car that you have never heard the name of before?

I was looking at bringing one back over when I came but I didn't have the cash by the end, But Rigoli performance brought one over!

The trick would be to get one with front end damage so you can use the local drivetrain (all ok for ADR's) and basically just swap over the local undercarriage, wiring, etc, with the Baja body. You'd also save a packet in duty fees...

The problem is they're still very unbalanced looking (like most 4 door utes, like those hideous Commodore's from a few years back), and weren't a very good seller in the US (took them years to sell them, I think they were only made to 2006 and they were still available in 2008), so most cars that come up for sale in the US are still pretty pricey. I think around $16k last time I looked, plus freight, duty, etc, puts it at $25k AUS, plus conversion, donor RHD car, engineering sign off, rego...and this is all based on whether it's even on the approved list of cars you can import.

i told dad about the plan to bring them in.
itll be expensive to buy them, then pay duty and what not.
we reacon you got too options.
get a rear half cut and mate it to an outback or cut an outback up and make a ute properly with engineers reports and what not.
since ive got a few spare L wagons if we cann get the Glass out of one weve already cut up a bit, we might give it a nip and take the back and see what it looks like

if i was going to cut one it would be a forrie. i got a m8 over there lookn at a few .was just a thought .as there is rhd parts over here would be easy conversion. hehe a lot easier than the cadie we imported yrs ago. prob just settle for an outback for a wile

wouldn't it work out cheaper to buy a roof damaged forrester/outback and mate it to a brumby rear-end yes a lot of chopping, widening etc but I don't think it would cost 25K

but then again to be the only baja on the block would be nifty as well

The factory was shared with Isuzu but is now Subaru owned, although they do make the US Camry for Toyota thanks to their shareholding in Fuji Heavy...

Interestingly they were never imported to America,they were built there.
