Dealer VS Owner's Manual - Service Maintenance

Hi Guys,
I'm confused a bit by what the dealer says about the above subject;
I have a 2007 Outback, and I only drive it on weekends. clocking 6,000 K's a year.. for the first year I followed the dealer's 6 mos. Service etc.. but somebody told me that I could do it longer than 6 mos. or skip since I rarely use my car?
I just read the Owner's Manual at it says Change Oil every 12 mos. while the Dealer says 6 mos. ? please correct me if I read the manual wrongly.
Cheers...
