cents per kilometer, how do you find out?

on other day had to use my personal car for work basics, drove 500kilometres as the work car was being used by other employee. My boss argued with me that its 53 cents per kilometre, I don't believe in that. (he is known to rip people off)
Anyway is there a phone number or web site that will tell you what it should be?

well there is an amount the ATO allow based on engine capacity to reduce your total income by which is crap. If you are at the under 34, 000 it only works out say if you got a dollar per kilometre as a deduction that reduces your total income by 500, the tax on 500 at 15 poo cent is you get $75 discount on yer tax bill. Next bracket is about 30 poo cent so youd get 150 less tax bill. The boss wants to pay you 53 cents a km, he is giving you more than 250 bucks - that is better, and if you get taxed a 30 poo cent on that you are still better off. Use a taxi at about $2 a km next time !!

I did nearly 700km in my B4 for work recently, got paid at the 75 cents per km rate. About $500 for taking the B4 for a fang, loving that!

Yeah, I was planning to leave him before Christmas, but bugger 2-3 weeks too early!! Ive had enough of - dodgyiness, shiftyness, cutting corners, unfair to customers, being ripped off, people complaining, it gotten worse for about 2 years now, when I first started there was a couple of angry customers and I got sucked into him (boss) from lying so on... A lot of people Ive met said "never go back to him" they're smart ones, dumb ones will keep going back to him because they think there is no one else out there!
Anyway my own business is getting successful, 2-3 jobs a week which covers 1 half weeks wages. But I'm worried if I am gonna get full time busy!

I don't think that is correct in this case.

Think about it - 74 cents per kilometre? So your boss is supposed to pay you $370 for driving 500 kilometres in your car?

The figures on that website are what you are supposed to use when you are claiming travel in your tax return. Not for a direct re-imbursement.

So naturally you don't get anywhere near actually 74 cents when claiming travel in your tax return because it's then based on whatever you tax rate is (like maybe 30%).

Usually people claim any work use for their personal car in their tax. If it's a regular occurance then you would work out a reimbursement arrangement with your employer, but I beleive this rate is ultimately just an agreed rate between the two.

Alpine sorry you lost your job over it! Bit extreme! What is your line of work anyway?

boss should be paying you what it actually costs to run your car!
my last place of work had the standard rate at 35 cents a km or something like that

did up a spreadsheet of cost of running the car per kms with everything on it... i nearly cried, damn expensive car to run!
but the boss started paying that rate, or it was gonna be taxis!

Yeah I was trying to sqeeze $$$ out of him as I'm being ripped off and I dont like that at all. (for example - recently he sold a panel saw advising buyer it had 5 HP motor but it really had 3HP motor that he changed over as new)

Service Work specialising in woodworking machinery and computer service work as well (ie. installation, new parts etc)..

I agree its a ridiculous rate but that is the policy in the state government department where i work (DSE in Vic), even has a link straight to that ATO page on the policy page on the intranet. Private vehicle is the absolute last option under the policy after pool vehicles, executive vehicles, taxis, hire vehicles etc but if you have no other option thats what they pay. We even double checked with head office cause it seemed excessive
