I know you can own a Victorian registered vehicle from interstate. NSW shouldn't be any different.

generally NOT. NSW has a rule , and some exceptions it seems for defence people, that if you move to NSW to live you need to transfer rego within three weeks. An up to $2000 fine if not and caught. Buy a car and not transfer ownership within 7 days and they 'tax' you for not doing so. I'd be cashing in the NSW rego by surrendering the plates to your local RTA and get QLD rego which is bound to be cheaper - make some money in the process!

yes my idea was just that buy the car drive it back to qld and cash in the rego, im just wondering if i can actually transfer the rego from the current nsw owner to me so i can cash the rego in? or do i have to be a resident of nsw with a nsw license to even transfer it???

for some reason it came in my mind, it has to be 6 months before you're allowed? I don't know where it came from. I brought an car from SA and brought it to victoria, it was lot easier just to let the rego run out so drove it around in SA registered but it was in my name that was about 8 years ago I did that.

Best is to try them. Tell them what you want to do as in buy car, notify them of new ownership but to transfer you need an e-safety pink slip inspection with the change of ownership check box marked by the AIS inspector with your details. With an e-safety inspection we no longer have to write in your details. You may think of surrender plates and rego sticker to old owner for a discount on its value and get a pink slip inspection done marked with VIN or body number and apply for a permit to drive it interstate, specifying start and stop place and dates. I think most if not all states have a reciprocal thing where when you present vehicle in home state for rego inspection and register it, you surrender plates and receipt proving you new owner and they return plates and organise the refund to go to you and not old owner.r

Six months before you're allowed what?
I'm quite sure you can own a vehicle despite being a resident of a different state. People do it all the time. But then I'm just some wanker on the internet. Ring the RTA and confirm. Their website doesn't specifically say.

Apparently the rules changed a little while back and the states have come to some kind of agreement as I found out with my brumby in vic! If you take in all the necessary documents ie inspections/ ownership and the like they will just transfer the rego to your new interstate address i.e. I had 9 months left of rego in NSW and I got 9 months of Vic rego in return, It was in my name both times but if thats a hastle transfer the rego into your name first then change address.

perth is ridiculous. cheaper rego to anywhere else but need to get car chec ked every year at owners expeense i think. tasmania is the best a lot of the rally cars here are registered there without ever crossing over. hmmmm

Spike don't know where you get your info from but there is NO annual check in Perth except for vehicles with engineered modifications, taxis, buses etc..
