hi guys,
I have left a cam rod off a EA82 MPFI head out in the weather and it started to rust obviously. I was just wandering if its possible to shave, polish or fix it.
Its just so i know if its worth to keep as a spare now or bin it :S ??
thx

That sort of rust should be ok. I'd chuck it in a bag with a squirt of WD40 to stop it getting any worse. When the time comes to use it again, clean it up and measure it with a micrometer to see if it's still within spec.
As you know, old Subaru parts don't grow on trees, so it's worth hanging onto.

pull them out and buff them up on a wire wheel going the same way as thay run and not to hard and it will be ok and then store in some new oil or diesel will be ok .
or if u have some cash spear buy some of that steel spray protecter in a can that puts a film of a wax stuff on them as it is good stuff .

Ive done this kind of thing before - i used the kitchen scourer (*that green thing that you scrab your dishes with) with some WD40 on the rusted metals, it comes off nicely and does not wear down too much, I did it on a cam once years ago that I left it in the weather for a week and it wasnt badly rusted, it was only surface rust.
I've also stored greased few items in plastic bag, not paper because paper sticks plastic peels off..
Cheers
