Hey guys,
I've got a rear disc brake conversion to put into my L series but i'm missing one of the calliper pins. I'm wondering if the caliper assembly is the same on the 2WD and 4WD rear disc models so i could scavenge a pin from a 2WD car. Does anyone know if this is the case?

It's number six in this diagram that i took from the XT service manual thats available on the forums. I've been through the manual and it only has one caliper diagram, so i'm guessing they're the same.

Hi Rhys , a few years ago I grabbed the rear discs calipers and backplates off a front wheel drive turbo Vortex and they looked the same as those on my RX turbo L .
I'm pretty sure I've used one of the discs and it interchanged perfectly .

Usually manufacturers don't change components between models if they can help it , more parts inventory and spares = greater cost .

If there were differences the manual would cover them as well .

Yeah they are the same Rhys and will fit your calipers.

FYI if you're taking the 2wd backing plates for a 4wd subi the hole to fit the 4wd bearing hub through might be too small. I had to take 4mm out around the hole to make it fit, this equals an 8mm diametre difference between the 2wd and 4wd backing plate holes... I know you don't need them but the backing plates arn't quite a direct swap...

Exactly Freddo. The only things that are different are backing plates (larger hole for 4wd) and the hub.

Thanks for the replies. I've got everything from a 4WD vehicle inc backing plates (minus that 1 bloody pin!). I've had it all sitting in a milk crate for nearly 12 months now, and i'm keen to get them in the car. Looks like i'm on the hunt for some 2WD callipers.

If memory serves me correctly some of the Nissan calipers (the floating or bridge section) interchanges with Subaru L series . They must have similar/same slide pins as L series rear calipers so check out a you pull it wrecker like Pick and Payless in Sydney .

So that means that if i had some 2wd rear discs, i could just machine the centre of the backing plate out and they will fit the 4wd hubs?

Gannon there's nothing stopping you from getting a suitably sized piece of steel plate and making a backing plate to hang whatever caliper you like off it - including the Nissan handbrake type ones . The std ones are just a piece of pressed steel plate with six holes in it and a splash guard tack welded to it .

All they have to have is the three holes for the fasteners to clamp them on the trailing arm and two to mount the caliper , the center hole should closely match that of the trailing arms boss to stop the plate walking around .

There is a need for someone to do a "How To" step by step, holding our hand along the way for disc brake rear conversion of other bits. Like STEP 1, find MY DONOR CAR, STEP 2, grab disc calliper, hose, etc etc

And some early (80's Accord front disc calliper halves match up too! To get rear handbrake on L series rear disc
