brumby thumping engine noise???

Post by scoobydoo » Mon Jul 27, 2009 9:28 pm

G’day,
Have got a 1989 brumby and it hasn’t missed a beat in the seven years I’ve had it, but now it’s having issues while driving. It started an hour into the drive at 100km/h. A loud thumping noise that rattles through from the engine so you can feel it in the steering wheel and pedals. It slowly went away. 2 weeks later the same thing only this time it isn’t going away. It only happens when you accelerate in gear. Other than that the engine starts and runs fine. I know it’s hard to guess without looking at it or hearing it, but any theories would be much appreciated.

Cheers

stuffed CVs or DOJs on the CV shaft can do random things like what you describe

I'm going with the DOJ's as well. When you accelerate it loads up the DOJ's, when you back off on the accelerator, it goes away. Check your boots and see if there are any splits, tears or cracks. Even if there isn't any, they could also be just worn out due to age. 7 Years is a good run. New ones are pretty cheap and easy to fit. Only takes 10 mins per side. Also check your engine and gearbox mounts as well whilst your looking under the vehicle.

10 mins per side to inspect and about 45 to replace shafts with plenty of practice from my experience
