Lifting motors - the easy way (trailer mod)

Stood there this morning looking at the Brumby running through all the ways I could lift the motor and trans out on my own, and have it easy enough to move around...

After a bit, my grey matter clicked and clunked and spat out a decent idea. Quick bit of cutting and welding and now I have a slip on gantry for my trailer. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

I worked out the design so that I could pick up a motor (or anything heavy) with the block and tackle, then wind the winch to bring it forward over the trailer bed, so I can lower it and transport it. Then it just slips off when I don't need it.

Oh yeah, and the radiator support panel is only remeved because I'd already done that to get everything else out easier. Would still work easily enough with a complete car...

Sweet idea

You should patent it and market it.

I second that!! You have to get rich somehow!! (how else will you afford those crazy modified EJ engines and tricky performance bits for your old subarus?)

Sweet! I guess if you needed more height you could extent the rear bars out and up... Just make sure you've got a good trailer hitch (or add weight to the front of the trailer ;))

what happens once you winch it past vertical and the frame falls forward? wont it just drop the engine onto the trailer?

That is an awesome trailer, are you running a Subaru Trailing arm set up underneath it? How hard was it to set up? One day i would like to set up a motor bike trailer the same way.

Yeah that looks sweet but as vv says you may need a stopper to stop anything really heavy from slamming onto the trailer
love the ideas you guys come up with
keep em coming :-D

Yep good idea, very similar to the way dumper bin trucks load and offload the bins, except they use hydraulic jacks instead of a winch, but a nice piece of home engineering.

Well, I could put a matress in the trailer, install hydraulic rams, or put shockies on the gantry to slow it down... But I think I'll just go with my original idea for the occasions I load something heavy and delicate onto the trailer using the gantry... Ever heard of ROPE? LOL

nice stuff as for the beyond vertical problem a couple of old shokies on rubber dampers to ease it into the trailer bed

a question as well why does that look like a 2wd box in a brumby or is it just the way the shots are taken

Nah mate, will be sticking with the old rope trick for the gantry.

And yes, it's a 2WD auto, as the Brumby had been "mod plated" from 4WD manual a long time ago. Suits my purposes though, as that motor/trans will be used "as is" in my drott. I'm simply putting sprockets on the output shafts to drive a secondary shaft directly above it via chains.

That that sounds like something I really want to see have to be cool must be a lot of weight etc for the poor little motor!
