valve clearances/hydraulic lash adjusters

hey
My car makes a wonderful ticking noise that it shouldn't, being an ea82 and having HLA's (aren't they a wonderful thing) now this has got me to thinking...

when they tick, there is obviously too much clearance there, so the valve is not opening as far as it should or exactly when it should.... this would starve the engine of air slightly and thus it would be down on power....

Therefore, if I replace the HLA's and relief spring, and put oil pump seals in while I'm there as they are leaking, I should gain significant power.... Much the same as adjusting the valve clearances on a solid lifter engine when they are way out...

Or am I reading too far into things??

Robert.

sounds good to me, mine ran so much sweeter with new HVLA's and new springs from Japan Subaru about $200 worth of springs.

When engines with adjustable tappets have been set properly after a long period of poor adjustment, sometimes the owners cant believe the improvement that it makes, so its probably worth a shot..........
