EA82 T belt cases always stuffed....

What is it with the back timing belt cases, of EA82's? They are always stuffed, whether they have had the captive thread ripped out due to seized thread or drilled out for same reason and been broken, and/or they have melted due to overheating. The meltdown makes for trouble lining up timing marks and fit back to the engine or possible belt clearance on reasembly. Do EJ's suffer similar fate?

Age and environment they live in plus people tend to over tighten the bolts when they refit them .
Same with belt tensioner bolts which is worse if it stretches/strips the threads in the aluminium .

Always check factory bolt tensions and set them correctly .

ha i dont have belts on either of my engines ej and ea for the same reason. on the ea the timing mark is in the exact position (from the top of my head) were the rocker cover meets the cam box, the slight gap were you can see the gasket is what i use.

would be caused by over tighten, EJ doesn't seem to have a problem.

Yeah, I am using the line of rocker cover or cam box, whatever it was. Still like half a tooth out retarded, but seen this before and it was OK. No belt covers at all is brave on dirt roader I reckon.

In regards to the cam cover bolts - I've removed mine and would have used cable ties, but I didn't have any so used some wire instead. Never going to have a problem with those captive nuts in the pastic back cover again!

ea doesn't matter if the belt slips, but the ej i pondered about off roading and belt slip.... some one mentioned the boys in the US driving them through mud with no problems and i didn't care to research it. fine atm and my engine bay has recived lots of dirt and lately water (cant ignore a huge puddle or two)

WOW thats awsome, you must get really good econnomy woth no belts on your engine...haha

no i have 3 little (very little but strong) men that spin my cams/crank. they work well together and can be moved from car to car when needed.... shut up you post nazi

Just a bit of trivia for those that choose the leave the middle belt cover off an EA82T engine .

On Sunday I decides to re-tension my belts because they look/feel a little loose after being replaced a few months ago .
I thinks no worries no middle cover to make life difficult - should be able to see/get at everything . Wrong
You can see from the top the drivers side tensioner bolt heads - if you go cross-eyed and resist the temptation to attack the PS pump .
The brace on the back of the AC elec fan j u s t doesn't allow enough space for a 3/8 dr torque wrench and short extension to get at one of them .
To get elec fan out other fans shroud has to come out and the lower 10mm headed bolts are a joy - aren't they .
The pass side tensioner bolts are even harder to see , don't bother with the lower one as only the digital eyes feel it .
Not enough swing again with torque wrench so off with the splash/bash guard and that steel plate EA82Ts use to insulate the headers heat I reckon .
I turns engine over by hand to put tension on the belts and cracks the tensioner bolts so under their springs load they pull in any slack on the slack sides of the belts . They both moved and their bolts were tensioned up to the factory spec which from memory is 20 Nm /14.8 ft lbs but check that .

It sounds a little quieter again so something gained I suppose .

when ever i work on the front of the ea82t i just remove the radiator don't lose much coolant and makes everything 10x easier. i don't have aircon tho.
