HELP, timing mark reference on ea82t

by SCOOBIDOO
Hi there,i run a subaru ea82t in an application which does not use the subaru flywheel.
As you can guess i need to have reference for timing belts and 20 degree setting etc..
I have 3 choice,s
1/ reference my flywheel off an ea82 flywheel
2/make my own front pulley reference indicater
3/buy one from someone here or on USMB.
The question is ..can anyone help with a ea82t front timing reference indicater and harmonic balancer to match for an ea82 ????
I know its a big ask,,they are out there, does any one know where i can find one??
..cheers in advance.

The flywheel marked like an original will give the greatest accuracy , this is because normally the flywheel is the largest diameter component turning with the crankshaft .
Reference marks for center stroke cam timing need to be accurate and this could be awkward on a smaller diameter component like a crankshaft pulley .

I don't know but Subaru may still be selling the crank pulley referenced timing scale bracket , probably parts ex Japan if they are still available .

I suggest you got to a Subaru genuine parts supplier (I use Tynan in Sydney) and give them this VIN number which is for the local spec 11/87 Vortex Spider AWD Turbo car which had them .

JFTAX7DR0BG 3023xx .

They are still on Subaru Australias computer system so they will be able to check its part number and availability .
The fact that its a piece of pressed tin plate with numbers on it tells me it'd be cheap to buy .

I did once suggest that if enough people wanted them made I could probably arrange to get them done but it could be a little exy with what labour costs these days .

I'm sweating on MPFI head to inlet manifold gaskets arriving from Japan today so if they do I'll try to remember to get details of the front timing scale bracket .

Cheers A .

PS need a local supply of those gaskets so if anyone knows where they are , genuine BTW .

steal post thread for a minute. Arian can you post up the part number and price of your gaskets please for future ref.

I agree with flywheel marking idea - but has SCOOBI already fitted engine ? making this idea last option !

This is not likely to be an answer for SCOOBI but I had his predicament in mind when looking at my EA82T to pull apart (and YES, the long intake manifold bolts came out but were stuffed)

Looking at cambelt sprocket, it has 36 valleys. Hmm...360 degrees divide by 10.

Each valley from the TDC cut on the casing lining up with the valley with the little hole that is used for lining things up - is worth 20 degrees in timing coz cam spins twice * cough :) * cough :) CORRECTION >> HALF the speed of the crank.

Just handy that EA82T with 3 plugger ECU needs 20 BTDC !

Knowing that when running with tight belts, spark timing was set at about 20BTDC at ~800rpm.

I then set timing mark at 20 on flexplate and looked at cam sprocket. It had moved almost precisely one valley retarded from TDC. If only there was a way to check when the dizzy fires precisely with this. Could just be !! I found 25 thou feeler gauge fits between the two bits prior or post to them lining up.

Hope this helps, or gets others brains going on what I just found but sure others knew

don't you mean cam does half crank speed?

I thought I had in the other thred .
OK these are all the genuine gaskets for a Spider Turbo MPFI EA82 engine .

For the record spider manifolds are in four sections being the top or plenum section , the crossover water log section , and the two injector stub sections . So :

GASKET-INT MANIF 14035AA160 x 1 . The gaskets at the heads inlet ports . Need 2 .
GASKET-WATER PIPE 14072AA060 x 2 . Water log gaskets .
GASKET MANIF MPI 14035AA170 x 2 . Plenum to lower stub section .
GASKET RM 44022GA320 x 1 . These are the Turbo type exhaust port to header gaskets with the steel crush rings inside them . Need 2 .

Cheers A .

Edited because I had the first and third part numbers the wrong way around . Sorry .

thanks, doesn't hurt to have the info dotted around the forum.

You know how sometimes, when alone, you can really stuff things up ?

Well, hours of searching and a very cleansing tidy up - I have to come clean.

I had one of these babies but could not recall where it was, so searched high and low, from A to Z. Mate, I am an idiot!! I remember thinking it was a Vortex thing and it may have already got in my way by way of losing a bit of bark. Vortex thing and ribbed belt rather than a V belt, there was no way I was gonna need the poxy looking thing. maybe, just maybe ( he says in a tiny voice) I chucked such a valuable component TO MAKE WAY FOR OTHER JUNK I STILL POSSESS like EA82 carby heads ??

I really managed that one up eh. :R

manage is a four letter word, managed and manager are six

I don't think they are any of those gaskets , the MPFI inlet port ones have two main holes and a water one from memory .

OMG , stupidity cells have just kicked in .

God help me , the inlet port gaskets are Pt no 14035AA160 and I've had them for a week or so ...
I've just been looking at mine to compare with the ones in the pic above and the coolant holes in mine indicate inlet port gaskets , the ones higher up between the injector stub pipes and the plenum/collector section don't have water holes . The the water log connects the stub pipes behind where the upper section bolts on and with separate gaskets .
Dipstick mistook the gaskets below the stub pipes for the ones below them .

No wonder I thought it strange that spider specific gaskets were available locally but not the common MPFI/MPFI Spider inlet port (to heads) gaskets .

Thanks all , cheers A .

scoobidoo, want to part with those dual port gaskets? and yes, they are for the spider-to-injector stubs, not manifold-to-head gaskets.
cheers.

Sooo Jonno..does that all eqate to....
1/ you might have a reference indicater...in which case would be a start for me.. :-)
or 2/ you had one...but you know you threw it out for sure...:-(
????? comon Jonno say its number 1.....

I could probably look into making them if I had a template to work off...
Disco, did you find the one you thought you had?

Without rereading my post.

I had a front water pump mounted timing indicator. I know I wasn't dreaming as I still have the spidey.

I have to say I no longer have said indicator after having searched from centre to right hand side of shed, then LHS to centre. Only at the end of search sinking feeling and mild recollection of do I need this thing - manage it is ugly and part of ribbed belt system I do not use (now thinking I need ribbed belt pulleys to stop single V belt squealing with power steering and alternator) However I still have all ribbed belt pulleys and ribbed belts only just went in bin, still retrievable in next 32 hours.

This search started looking for the water log that bolts to inlet manifold with two welch plugs that can leak near timing hole in gearbox.I had to go look at one fitted to car before I found in a spot I had already looked in twice. I wonder if a hoto can be posted up of the timing marker might help my search again ?

I think it is gone, but you know how things can turn up when your not looking for them ( my mums wisdom handed down many generations I am sure), but this time I think not - it was in the bottom of a home made chipboard box. I should try and make one.

21171AA001 about $10 ex Japan timing marker

oh, SCOOBIDOOD, the harmonic balance had a dirty big chip in it and flogged out pin hole (no keyway!?) + bin

I have some of the PS and idler and a/c grooved pulleys

Should be easier to mark existing crank pulley if you can set fly to TDC and 20DBTDC if the above are actually still available.

I ahve oredered some intake water log to manifold gaskets so asked to try a marker for funture
