A farm down the road from my parents place, there is a white Brumby and as far I know it has been sitting same spot for about 2 years now, no rego etc, body does looks like its in a good nick but haven't "stepped my foot" on the property to have a look, went past there about 3 weeks ago and its still there, more likely its still there today, for years I want a Brumby for as a hobby/collectors item car to have fun with (I love old cars to play with!) but my wife won't be happy if she hears this(!)... I want to go there again and place an offer on it... My brother thinks he knows them and he said the engine is blown.. dunno why what the story si but not worried about it... I reckon its early series Brumby such as 1985-1989 model single headlight.

If I do place an offer - since it might have rust on the tray, blown engine.... good body? but would rip the interior out and install touring wagon interior in with electric dash etc also EJ20 or EJ22 engine with AWD... how much should I place an offer? and also other things I *should* look for (i.e. rust on chassis) before placing an offer?

Without having seen the body I wouldn't know about price, best to see if you can look first then make an assessment. Without looking my mind is telling me $1000 but again that is WITOUT looking...

Places for rust - under windscreen and obviously the tray. Under the brumby should be checked throughly as well - I've seen MY's rust out in some of the pillars, especially near the front jacking point and just below the firewall in the chassis rail. Also check the front end (when the door's open) of the doors for rust and the same area of the car and the pillar up from the side mirrors on the body. Also check the tailgate lower section for signs of rust.

Other than that keep an eye out for past accident damage that has been repaired. I know you'll know that a shot drive train in these things is no big deal, nor is a worn interior - basically what you'll want to be paying for is a good body for your project, remember this when you check it out and consider making an offer - don't get over excited and buy it with your head in the clouds!

My, you are generous. For a project car of little value and much rust expected I'd be offering $400 to $500.

I paid $600 for mine and he drove it registered from a paddock near jindabine to drop it off to me (Delivery cost extra) but I would offer them around $500 but take your brother along for the drive and ask exactly whats wrong with it and remember things get worse when their sitting around neglected! But there used to be quite a few about when I lived down near brown brothers winery!

Try using a art analogy when you look at it.
Your looking to buy a blank canvas not a painting.
That way you will not be emotive about it.
When you get emotive, like art buyers, you will pay to much.

You need to be in the right frame of mind when shelling out the hard earned.

Yesterday i went back there, i found the owner (he wasn't happy that i was on his property) and i asked him about the Brumby, its not running as it has blown headgasket, and i asked him if he was going to sell it or what he hasn't thought about it, he said he isn't using it, just sitting there doing nothing he said go have a look so i did. Lots of problems with it from my inspection, has put me off, which is - seats are badly worn, both doors has rusts. Tray has holes in it, tailgate is fully rusted. And said myself it'll have rust under it. Passengers side bottom still is badly rusted, too much work involved. So walked off the property. Was kinda feeling sorry for the Brumby.

Mate.keep an eye on ebay. There's always a few there and it pays just to keep an eye on them. Dealers will have them trumped up and well over priced saying things like,"much sort after little ute" blah blah blah.

Keep your eye out, don't be in a hurry and you will see there are some wrecks, but now and then there are quite a few that pop up are clean and tidy and original and reasonably priced with a genuine reasons for sale. Most offered reason is two seats, and a baby coming etc etc need bigger car.

My dad has one for sale 3200 still registered. He is in Taree NSW though, i keep asking my brother to send me photos but he is being lazy.

One thing i've noticed with a lot of them to look for is the hoses going to the heater coil. A lot of people just make them bypass the heater coil which is a sign of the coil having bad rust which is a really big pain to fix.
