Steering question.

Post by timmeh1 » Mon Mar 02, 2009 12:44 pm

First off i would just like to say hi to everyone in the forum : )
you all seem like a great bunch!

I'm having some trouble with my 1995 subaru heritage and wondered
if anyone would be able to lead me in the right direction of what it might be.

Okay, so when im turning, say anywhere near full lock, u-turns etc,
if im driving slowly you can hear my rear wheels, skipping, jumping kind of
, like as if there is equal power going to all the wheels, but because the front
wheels are on a 45 degree angle the rear ones are trying to move but cant so they like jump as i reverse. Also when doing a u-turn or any turn at moderate speed my rear wheels will squeal as if i was racing around the corner, i dont know how clear this explination is, if no one gets it i might make a video or sound recording. I dont think it is wheel alignment, because at current, the car drives perfectly straight when not holding the wheel and dosent seem to drift to any direction, at speed it seems fine, its just during the turns im having issues.

any help would be great!
regards
Tim

Sounds like torque bind and/or the centre diff.
Is it manual or auto?
Does it do it even worse in reverse and at full lock?

yep reverse is where the wheels jump the most, in full lock the car wont move by itself it needs more throttle,
and its full automatic

also the car dosent shudder in reverse, it dosent seem to have any vibrations but I looked up toruq bind and that covers it pretty well, its just the rear wheels, and they "wheelhop" when reversing slowly or in slow turns, and squeal in u-turns etc

I put the fuse in to put the car into FWD,
i still get exactly the same wheel hop, when driving forwards or reverse in a tight turn or full lock the wheels will hop at low speed in the rear.
Although in FWD the wheel squeal in sharp turns appears to be gone.
any help would be great,
regards
Tim
