Why the hell is it so bloody difficult?

I'm so shitted off right now its not funny.

All I want is a goddamn rear fuel filter for my Brumby. So I get under it and get a general idea of what it looks like. I go to a parts shop and they have two listed. A Z366 and another one. I look at the other one. Input on one end, output at 180 degrees. Definitely not it. So it must be the Z366 right? Bloody WRONG.

I get the filter so I lift up the car, get underneath and its the wrong one. Input, then output at 90 degrees. Well the ryco one is close, just a 30 degree difference between the two but the input and output are on the wrong f-ing side.

So FFS can anyone please tell me where to get a rear fuel filter for my Brumby?

On top of this, I asked for a dizzy cap, well whaddya know - good thing I didn't take their word for it, the book they had only had brumby listed as an EA71 or an EA82T. What the hell? Is it that bloody hard to get suppliers to stock the right bloody part???

And don't even get me started on Subaru, if your cars not new and you wont be paying big money for them to do the work they don't wanna know ya.

Bloody hell.... I better go and wash my hands, the petrol fumes from trying to make the new filter fit are getting to me.

Sorry about the rant but could someone please give me some good advice here? On a positive note, the advice I have received in other threads has been invaluable to a n00b like me so please keep up the good work. Thanks.

errr there common as birdshit.

all you need is one with 2 8mm outlets. doesnt matter how they point just put the hoses on making sure theyre not kinked

Is not Subaru - is the retailer and their US based parts book.

For example, we have all heard 'Sorry mate, have no listing for a L-Series, only have a DL Wagon listed'.

Same thing

And with your filter, what's wrong with zip ties!!

Agree though, cars can be frustrating as hell

I could almost make the filter work if I clipped it on upside down, but then it might fall out of the holder.

Yeah I told them that they must have been looking at the yank book - but the thing is, even the ryco website doesn't have my filter. Maybe I am meant to use the one with input / output on opposite sides and someone has just put in the wrong one to begin with. Stuffed if I know.

my l-series one(which is probably identical) has the input on the opposite side to the output. just make it fit mate. Itll be ok. i mean my fuel PUMP has been cable tied up for ages with loads of 4x4 n stuff with no probs.

yeah, might just put it in upside down so that the flow direction is correct then cable tie around it to make sure.

Um - is that even legal / roadworthy?

Subaru listings are hardly ever right in the books, and the parts interpreters are usually fairly hopeless too - ie incapable of knowing the difference between an L series and an MY for instance.
Easiest way is to just bring your existing part in and show them exactly what it is then say "give me a new one".

*edit.....yes Alex, probably about time you sorted out a proper fuel pump mount! Only a matter of time for the cable ties to go brittle. :)

Welcome to the fun of subaru parts interpretation! Best thing I've done is get to know my local parts guys (started with dad before I got my license) - now we "problem solve" the parts.

Other models to look under for the L series is Leone or 4wd wagon - always quote the year of your L, this can make a difference sometimes.

Don't let your subi part/work get to you either. I figure working on cars, especially modifying them, is a good test of one's character ;)

i was saying however that it doesnt need to be a 'subaru listed filter' for it to work.

So basically its a case of screw the parts listing, just find one and make it fit?

Right, so I can't damage anything or cause the thing to catch on fire or something like that by using an incorrect filter? As long as it has 8mm ends? and I don't kink the hoses?

These vehicles are so frustrating... time to get a Hilux or something I think (only kidding)

try a multy fit ryco the clear one wihe inlet and outlet at oppisit end

maybe the one you are trying to replace has been retrofitted in the past twenty odd years because the Z366 was not found or availablew at the time of need. I have written under my bonnet Z428 for front fuel filter and Z366 for the rear of my 84 Brumby. Ball joints are BJ257 or at repco RBJ257, GH600 is ya rotor GH609 is the dizzy cap for EA81 If you read this please get a permanent marker and do likewise on the underside of ya bonnets for future reference...and any other numbers you may encounter

I use a Z428 fuel filter as well under the bonnet of my 92 Brumby. For the rear I use a DF198/1 which is virtually identical to the original one and even clips in properly. I had no problems getting anything inluding dizzy cap and rotor from Sprint Auto parts here in Adelaide.

I've had similar problems with all makes including the dizzy cap on a hilux you need to upgrade the plug leads to make it fit!
But as stated the filters are probably ones that were sitting there at the time so thats what they used,
Funnily the listing for the fuel filters were correct for my brumby but talk about a performance upgrade I don'tknow how the carby even manged to get any fuel at all!

My experience with Suby parts has been frustrating too. Getting a properly manuf rotor and the correct length plug wires ( regardles of who made them ) for my ea82T has been near impossible. Here in my area I do best when I ignore price and deal with name brand and oem parts and old timers, seasoned parts people who can interpet their info and ask the right questions....nothing more frustrating than to drive 2 hours round trip to find out the parts are no good. Thankfully the ride's worth the hassles.
