spare wheel question

Post by pitscars007 » Thu Dec 04, 2008 4:34 pm

Hi AU subaru members -I have a question about my impreza - I want to buy new tyres - 195/65 15s - but the tyres on the car are 195/60 15s - will it be safe to use the original spare (195/60) if the rest are 195/65 - if not will a 195/65 fit in the spare wheel well ?

Yeah, if you're driving on spare tyre for short distance but not ideal for long trip otherwise you'll burn out your centre diff, thats for AWD, if yours is FWD you can have odds in the rear as long both in front is the same..
The 195/65 spare will fit in the spare tyre compartment. I have 205/70 15" on my car and 195/60 15" spare tyre - big difference and once had flat tyre and drove it to car tyre place about 20 kms later..
Cheers

I've got 16" forrie rims (on my lib) and I have a std 14" lib tyre as the spare wheel as its the only thing that fits. I've driven on it plenty of times when I get 16" flats. I wouldn't do long distances though.

Thanks for the reply - it will be a lot cheaper buying 4 tyres instead of 5 - although getting 5 and rotating them may be better in the long run - what do you think ? - any ideas on brands of tyre ? cheers pitscars

A lot of tyre places offer 5 for the price of 4, though December is a bad time to get a deal as people are getting their cars serviced prior to holidays...

Rotating is only going to work for uni-directional tyres, so that may not be much value. I personally like the Bridgestone RE711 tyres on a small car like the Impreza. I would avoid any of the cheaper Korean tyres (I have found Kumho in particular poor in wet weather).

Budget around $130 per tyre for something decent...

Agreed.... Learnt that from last year until I cracked at the tyre place then they did it, better after new year if you're not in hurry, if you are then fair enough but do it asap.
Get the tyres that has higher threadwear rating ie. 480 and tyres are made in Japan are the best.
