For a Subaru offroad, I'd pick the 3.9 5sp EA82 D/R box. Mainly because I hate driving auto cars so even with the "advantages" (;)) of an auto I just couldn't do it.

I've driving a liberty on soft stuff and didn't like the slack in the centre diff, too much slip. And I don't like the shifter linkage in the MY 4sp D/R box.

The FT4wd box I built was nice, but it couldn't be run with a welded diff and it was only a 3.7, and the 5.4% difference between the 3.7 and 3.9 hopefully will make a difference with my 10% larger tyres.

Theres a guy on USMB that built an early Legacy 4sp Auto into paddle shift. Kinda cool but I still like driving with a clutch.
