EJ to VW adaptor kit

Post by D3V1L » Mon Nov 03, 2008 8:21 pm

hey guys, does anybody here know anything about the adaptor plate and flywheel kits for fitting EJ motors to VW engines?

im confident i can make the actual adaptor plate, but the flywheel is a different story

i know u can buy kits but for the mammoth amount of money i just cant justify it on my buggy. ANY help would be appreciated as ive got a subaru motor to put into my buggy and really want to get this happening. and this adaptor plate and flyuwheel are the only 2 things now holding me back

cheers

Hey Dave

Do you know Chris, who lives in Banjup? cause I brought a adapter kit from him years ago for a EJ into a late model VW van (caravelle?? or something to that nature) and it wasn't that expensive and seemed to do the job just fine.

Basically what he does is cut the centre out of the ej flywheel and welds it in place of the vw centre or somethig like that..

Vw flywheel and clutch, redrill the vw flywheel to suit the subaru bolt pattern and put a spacer the same thickness as the adapter plate between it and the crank which i think is needed(?) And balance, i think thats it...

Volks conversions on the Gold Coast. John Sherman has been making them since the 60's.

You usually need to run a 215mm kombi clutch or paddle type 200mm in a beetle chassis with an EJ22 or slippage ensues, even in a buggy.

Here's a buggy I did an EJ22 conversion on 6 months ago.

You also need a short sump and to fabricate a rear bar that incorporates engine mounting as the beetle box mounts are not sufficient to handle an EJ22. Cooling system is a lot of work also.

You could go crazy and just buy one. Seems to work out well for most people. ;)
