What to do...
What to do...
ok guys, i need some help cos im useless at making smart decisions...i dont know whether to sell my l wagon and get something else or spend money on it and bring it up to scratch. engine wise its brilliant, getting on average 700ks out of tank with most of that city driving...however, the brakes, suspension, steering rack and tyres and a few other things are fair shagged and im looking at $2500 or more to bring it up to where i want to it to be, i also want to make it 4wd as mentioned in a previous post. so...do i do all that or get something else and break my l wagons heart? please help

For the money you would be able to get an early Liberty but if you have your heart set on the L series then you could get a donor rusted touring wagon and instal all its good bits. if you are going to 4wd from a 2wd you will need to change the fuel tank as well as the rear end and gearbox. It isnt that hard to do and if you have a few mates at it with you easily done in a day. The bonus with a touring wagon is you will most likey end up with power steering, AC and a nice interior.

Subi Wan, I'm pretty sure that the 2wd's were fitted with the same fuel tank that clears the rear diff - my sister's '84 L has it, I'll double check this on the weekend.
If you do want an L, you could probabily get an L in reasonalbe nic and put that on the road. The touring wagons have something special about their shape I think plus they come with electric everything
And MPFI or Carbie...
Cheers

The trusty MY - its no L series and many will tell you thats a good thing!
Its a little smaller for space in the rear, but does still have all the touring wagon options with exception to central locking I think.
You ditch the digi dash in these if you don't like it - get to that down the track if you end up with it.
The unit looks clean - you'd want an inspection of course! I don't know if its really worth $2000 - I've seen units like this and just as clean at the wreckers, you can usually pick them up for around $500 - $800, may have dead engine but would still be a clean "canvas" to start with.
Matatak will beable to give you a good idea of how good these cars really are. He's modified his a little which is always an option with these vehicles.
Keep an eye out, you don't always buy the first thing you see - get to know the model you're after
Cheers

if youre looking to spend 2grand, sell your l-series should be able to get 2-3k for it. Then youve got 5grand to spend. Can get a nice dual range liberty wagon for that, with strong suspension EJ22 with a bucketload of grunt, etc etc.

mmmm shes a looker from far away, but oh dear, up close...rust, oh look some more rust...hey, shouldnt there be a door where that rust is?
Im gonna stick with my L, besides shes only done 217000k's id rather spend thousands on new suspension, brakes and 4wd system after looking at that MY...which brings me 2 my next question, if im gonna spend stupid amounts over the coming years, should i get part time 4wd system or awd system?
i should probably mention that im not too keen to get rid of my L because it has the EA82 carby engine which im preparing to run hydrogen through...this should make an almighty (controlled) bang...and save me a pile of money in fuel...
