L Series Rust
Posted: Mon Sep 29, 2008 12:07 am
Hey, So my brother and I have known for a while that the rust around the windscreen of his L Series has been getting pretty bad, so we decided to do something about it.
Ingredients
Permatex Liquid Metal Filler
A Semi-rough file
Some fairly smooth Wet & Dry
Foam Sanding Block
Touch-up paint Primer
Touch-up Paint
Wax & Grease Remover
Small wire brushes
Masking Tape
Newspaper
Auto silicone
Clean Rags
We ripped all the windscreen trim off, Gave it all the good scrub with some wire brushes, filed all the rust we could off and sanded it all back to bare metal. Cleaned it with the wax and grease remover.

Used the Metal Filler to fill in all the holes in stages until they were built up enough. Left it overnight to harden and then filed and sanded until it was level and smooth.
Then cleaned again with wax and grease remover and did 3 coats of touch up primer. After that we did 3 coats of touch up paint.
Now the touch up paint is a little higher than the rest of the paint so it's looking quite strange, to fix this we very lightly sanded it with very wet, very fine wet & dry.
Then we just used the Auto Silicone to fill up any gaps and to seal the windscreen trim back in place.
In the near future this will probably be getting sent to a panel beater to get the rust cut out properly and new metal put in etc etc.
All up it cost about $55 from Super Cheap Auto.
Let me know what you think, please take in mind the pictures make the rust holes seem worse than they are, although they are quite bad.
Cheers
,Dom.
