RUST is the biggest killer.
Check inside doors. Under floor pan, and around tray

And around front window, especially the lower corners. The front clip is common to all MY's so damaged panels are not an issue there, but the back is specific to the Brumby and parts are quite hard to find.
For $5k you would expect something in VERY good original condition or a lesser condition modified vehicle.

5 grand should get you an absolute gem but you'll probably have to look at quite a few to find it. Before you start looking, decide wether you want the sports roof or not. It's about the only thing you can't change. The sports roof models are harder to find because there were less of them sold, but they also let more heat into the cabin which can annoy you in hot weather.
You should also decide what you want to use the car for. If you want an offroader, you might want to keep an eye out for one that already has a lift kit, bigger tyres, bullbar and towbar.
After that your options are pretty limited. Aircon was a factory option as was the 3/4 DIN stereo that you'd throw away.
The gearshift will give you an indication of how hard it's been driven. I've seen very sloppy selectors below 200,000km where you can't find reverse and nice crisp ones like mine at over 300,000.

Another bad spot for rust is in the chassis rail (well kind of) just under the drivers passengers feet. If you look from underneath you will see the low spot where the water sets. Also check the CV by going lock to lock and listening for a chrunching/clicking....

I'll be selling my brumby very soon, EA81Turbo, Subasports bullbar/rollbar, 15" superlite wheels, 2" lift, mp3 stereo, etc etc etc. How soon are you looking to buy? Would probably cost $500-$800 to ship it down there.

I'll remember all this stuff. I shouldn't have as much trouble finding a decent brumby as the mechanical side of things is less important to me as it'll all be torn out anyway - though I suppose a motor and gearbox in good condition would sell for a better price. But the rust issue is a big one.

Dad told me there was a good one at the wreckers that he saw two weekends ago at centre road. By the time I had made inquires on friday someone had already grabbed it. He said the only rust on it was the front left pillar near the bottom hinge, a typical place they rust out.
For rust in these check:
- Visable tray area
- Under tray, use a torch. Also check for moisture that may have seeped through
- Front pillar near lower hinge, they tend to rust out here
- Under and around the windscreen
- In the tail gate
- Front section of the doors - we had these replaced in
Sunny the Brumby
- rear guard area
- floor in cab - this will indicate water leaking into the cabin, could be through rust holes or the air duct.
Good luck, take your time, we were looking for about 6 to 10 months - the 4 month gap being the time we toyed with the idea
Cheers
Bennie
PS - Thalas is planning an electric brumby...
