Oil goes from the pickup, through the pump and then the filter before making its way around the engine. If the filter was building up pressure, its only gonna between the pump and the filter,... which will reduce the pressure going to the rest of the motor.

Myth for sure.
pretty much if the Oil pump is good you wont have a problem using the reccomended filter.
Of course on some smaller engines you wont want the filter to be 'that' big as it will take longer to build up the Operating pressure and over time will show wear on internal parts from each time you start it up cold.
even some 'decent' size engines have relatively small filters.
a Z79A is what is used on the 3.5 V6 DOHC in my parents pajero, and that would be similair if not smaller to what we all use in our EJ's (Z495)
