New L-Series in the family! EJ22 powered

Mentioned in another thread that my younger bro (Josh) and I were going to look at an EJ22 powered L-Series today. Well we went and looked, looked some more, took it for a nice long test drive in the rain (no traction) and then parted with the necessary dollars to make it ours.

Details are as follows..

-White 1991 Model Enduro
-170,000 odd kms
-Mod certified EJ22, not 100% on the gearbox/diff combination (will need do some reading on here to learn i think)
-Unsure on lift but it's certified and the clearance is pretty damn good
-Bumper Replacement bars front and rear, rear with a wheel holder
- All registered and roadworthy in QLD, just needs some tyres ASAP as they're old and hard as the poor thing has only done 50,000kms in the past 8 years.

Now I've never driven a L-Series, let alone a EJ22 powered beast and I think it's absolutely awesomel. Retro styling so heaps of character but then refined with the fuel injected goodness. The thing is so smooth, idles like a kitten and runs just as well as my Gen 2, heaps of throttle response (wheelspin into third in the wet in FWD) and no lack of grunt.

Seller wasn't an enthusiast but according to the paperwork a guy by the name of Rex Hood from Gympie was the original owner (car was purchased new in 92') and in the late 90's did both the lift and EJ swap.

Anyway, hopefully I'll get him to join so he can learn about the great car he now owns!

take it easy on the FWD burnouts.. the front diff WILL let go if you keep it up.

haha thanks mate, very good advice I think.

is bloody funny rolling along in an old L series at 60kph then mashing it and the thing lighting up..

brings out the inner bogan in me (owned a 5.0L VN many years ago)

dont worry we used to do similar bogan things in lifted RX turbo sedans many moons ago

Well I found a few mentions of Rex Hood (and the mighty L series) in old trip reports on the Subaru 4WD Club of QLD's website. This little L has certainly been on some adventures, if only it could talk.

The Subaru club connection makes me wonder whether anyone here knows the story behind this car and what made Rex sell it around 2002? Looking at the paperwork we got with the car it was sold to the guy we bought it from through a car broker in Brisbane, means it either ended up at Auction or in a wholesale car yard.

Took it on it's maiden voyage up to DI yesterday, while there was a bit of swell the sand was pretty wet and compact thanks to all the rain so it was easy going for most of the trip. Car handled the first cutting with ease, the Leisha track and a trip right out to the point with next to no visability thanks to the wind and rain. Freshwater track was fairly rutted out in places but still not much of a challenge for the little L.

Didn't get any pics but will get some as soon as the weather clears.
