I've been told that in a ute, That drums are better, as long as they are serviced/ maintained well.
Thoughts???

Drums do a good job if serviced and maintained well.

Discs give you a much better braking feel though, there's a huge difference in braking performance between rear drums and rear discs.

The reason we made the decision to upgrade the whole brake system was because previously it wasn't close to satisfactory, maybe it is because I am used to driving modified cars that I upgrade the brakes in but our brumby was dangerous in traffic and just in general. When taking apart the system we expected it to be in a horrendous state however front rotors and pads were good, rear drums were good and the shoes had plenty....everything except the brake lines (which were a worry) looked pretty good. So the decision was if there wasn't much wrong with the brake system then it needed to be upgraded, especially if we have a bit more power going it was something I wanted to know would be reliable .

Problem lies there within - getting the maintenance.
Did over 100,000km between machining drums, new everything, then to fit disc rear. Minimal war on shoes suggests they really were not friggin doin' much work despite me adjusting every oil change , or so. I was surprised to see how much meat was on shoes.

Like many others, never looked back since fitting dics, though driving a drum braked Brum recently - was wanting for another set so discs ....

This deserves its own topic and had I not read what you had written I would have started the topic myself. With the idiots out on the road I had several near misses in the Brumby due to the front brakes locking up under heavy braking and was lucky not to rear end a few people. It was downright dangerous.

Since fitting rear disc brakes I have not locked up my front brakes once (not even under heavy braking in the rain) and the car stops a LOT faster with plenty of grip on the road, and you can actually hear the tires working hard to grip the road whereas before the wheels would just lock up.

I really don't know how I managed to avoid a major accident.

The beast is nearly ready to emerge from the garage :).

Currently designing a custom front bull bar and the engine should hopefully be running on tuesday/wednesday. Can't describe how excited I have been in the last week putting it all back together and seeing our hard work starting to pay off.

We were lucky to have a once in a life time trip to the wreckers in which we managed to pick side mirror, bonnet release cable, headlight adjusting screws, headlight surrounds also a bunch of brackets and seals. A very successful trip.

this is a very very rough idea of what we are thinking for the bullbar at this stage

I have a friend who runs a workshop mainly in the race/project car side of things so he is going to do the bull bar for us. Most of his work are cages and bracing so hopefully it should come up pretty well

Always wondered how everyone gets their plastic and trim bits to look so nice. Maybe it's the photo but those headlights, indicators, grille and all the plastic around it look nearly new! Great work by the way ;)

Cheers for that Silver Bullet,

There is not a piece on the car that has not been pulled apart and cleaned. Any of the black trim was all cleaned, sanded and repainted with the metal components just getting an autosol treatment. It was unbelievable how much crap was in the indicators so they were thoroughly washed out.

Nice to be finally putting it all back on the car :)

It's pretty awesome to experience this isn't it?! I'm still stoked and kind of can't believe that I had R.Scoo gutted earlier this year :D With the effort you've put into this it'll be all the more sweeter - probably better than a new brumby!

And that bullbar should look sweet as riding up front!

Hey Scoobie Doobie,

Thanks alot for the kind words :). We were lucky enough to get a place that were doing a $1500 deal for resprays however throw alot more in the budget by the time and panel repairs, prep etc happens. Definitely changes the Ute entirely!

On another note........It's Alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep that is right, thanks to help from "little white ute" tonight the beast roared into life. A testament to the rebuild of the engine and a wonder that we managed to get it together in a somewhat correct way  but it turned over nice and easily and I couldn't imagine it going too much better.

So a big week or so coming up, alot of work inside the cabin as it is still pretty much stripped and then some finalising in the engine bay and we are up to road test time....

Good thing there are only a couple unknowns to test out in one drive

Brake System (Rotors, Pads, M/C, Lines, Rear conversion)

Gearbox - Complete unknown has had some work in regards to shifter but who knows how the gears/synchros are

Engine - Sounds brilliant but still new everything to test out

Thermo Fans - still toying around with the set ups although they seem to work effectively

All Electronics - Finally bit the bullet and got an auto sparky out to test some of the circuits today and definitely don't regret it.

Completely new interior including seats, door cards, sound system, electric windows

Spent this morning at a photography course so I guess I could get inspired to get a couple of pics up soon :).

Update- we had quite a lot of electrical dramas with our loom as it had been chopped to pieces and we suspected quite a few earth points were missing. So after a late friday arvo run to the wreckers we managed to get the full cabin loom out of another brumby as well as some other goodies. So after cleaning it up it looks in really good nick and we will replace looms and then be able to start setting up the interior and we are almost ready to get it on the road :)
