Is it worth cutting the chassis rails for the minimal advantage (if any) this motor has over a SOHC EJ25? Or an SOHC EJ22 for that matter? Whats wrong with a turbo? Can a 6" Subaru on 30" tyres really go that much further offroad than a 3" Subaru on 27" tyres?

I think someone needs to get out in his shed and prove us wrong. Anyone can stand around in a circle and talk a whole load of rubbish, it takes someone who actually treads the path to convince me.
Haha. You got me there. Was mixing ideas that don't mix. True about the t-case.
Also I just asumed a 25 DOHC would have more low end torque then a 22 SOHC. Am I wrong? Dyno sheets anyone?

I gather what you mean about needing it to be proved. I have seen some big subie rigs, and talked to some of the guys who drive them. From what I have heard they can go quite a bit more then the standard lift (some even follow modded jeeps into the woods.)

As for highway speeds. Yes, most quite comfortably cruse as 70mph

As for the turbo. From my expierence turbo motors have less compression. Less compression = loss of low end torque. You have to drive them around at 2.5K RPM to get decent torque. And for rock crawling that isn't such I good idea I gather. But I guess here (where I live at least) the only offroad spots left are sandy ones.. I just would want a rig that can take anything, not just sand and dirt roads.

Next offroad rig I build anyway won't be subaru I don't think :|

How about lets leave it there and wait for proof, if it ever comes (I was talking to someone in the SA club that seemed pretty interested in building something like this)

As for the 2 door, I never liked that style of rear window. But really its a personal preference thing. Other problem is it comes with that "touch me and I die" EA. Put a 20G in and it would be awesome. You can also fit a viscous centre diff in the FT4WD box.

aaaaaah, on the topic of L coupes (I think that was what everone was talking about)
I drove that blue one. It was very nice to drive, firm, tight susp, good grunt, AWD box. Inside and out it looked to be in A1 condition, until you poked around the darks areas.
It had severe rust across the whole back panel behind the bumper and from the bottom of the A pillar to the sills in the door jams. who knows what else the fresh paint was hiding. would have cost heaps to set right, on top of compliancing costs.

the guy offered it to me below the $3500, but I just didn't have the time or inclination to take it on.

I'd still love one, exactly like that one, maybe a little STi badge to muddle things.......
