Less scary- but amusingly I recall towing the old tandem dive boat trailer down the highway years ago and being overtaken by a trailer wheel.

My mate and I both looked at it thinking , that looks like ours??
It was!
( tandem wheels meant we didn't feel it go )
We were doing 110, the wheel must have been doing 30 more.
It bounced for about a kilometre into the bush.
It took a long time to find too.
Bloody wheel bearings.
1989 Subaru WonderBrumby II

1991 L Series wagon, white and perfectly normal apart from the ticking, no I think that is normal.

I guess i was doing about 40 but i was accelerating rather heavily coming off a curb. Certainly is an eye opener. I think the entire damage was caused by the ball joint failing. I have never had one do this in my whole 6-7 years of owning a subi. No real fail safe way of preventing it i guess.

The strut restrictor seriously prevented a LOT of extra damage. The restrictor plate ended up being the only thing (except brake lines) physically holding the wheel under the car. Im not sure if the restrictor has been damaged or not yet but i know the strut would have droped out and hit the road if it wasn't there.

There was no signs that it was on it's way. I had had a small squeak on that side for the past 2 weeks but could not find anything faulty. The ball joint was bought new and put on about 2 years ago.

Wow only 2 years old....

With the type of driving we do, and the price of ball joints and ease of installation I rekon they should be a yearly maintanence replacement!

Yeah im going to replace them yearly now... way too important for one to just brake in half.

Hatch is back on the road now. Big thanks to Mike and Tim for the parts.
