These sort of symptoms sounding more terminal are usually best fixed by not fixing, but find a wrecker with six months labour and parts warranty used donk.

If it is blow by you'd feel extra air thumping about when listening to oil fill tube with cap removed.

Crap luck or past neglect by previous owner ??

i wont be rebuilding but replacing as you said with a engine with service history for sure!
something tells me that the odd reading at 165,000 on my car isnt correct if you catch my drift. either that or the previous owner didnt service it at all. but the change of dash sounds more likely.

yeah, surprising how some people have a great car but the tight-wad sets in once purchased (what? I have to pay for a service everyonce in a while ?") and pass on any possible trouble to the next owner. Seen a few big dollar BMW's with expensive replacement tyres running near bald ! I know a tight wad with a BMW that was forever getting his money bled out of his cars - so much so the trade in dealer rang back furious tyres bald and no rego on it as traded !

You starting to think 165,000 is too little km for its age and appearance ?

the interior was very clean when i got it, and the body wasnt great bad but didnt look like it had done a lot of work. hard t say, does really matter any more ive had the car for nearly 3 years and now i have to fix it. i would say the previous owner was as you were saying, just tight...

That's bad luck mate, I doubt the dash was replaced to cover up kays. It may have been just a lemon from the start. My mate just blew up his car, actually the wifes car. Nissan Xtrail, never been off the road, basically just drove the kids around. Bought new 1 owner always serviced at Nissan, 120,00 kays 5 1/2 years old engine goes Bang. 6 months after warranty ran out, Nissan quoted 9k for a replacement, needless to say my mate was very pissed off. These things happen to all makes.

Like a lot of us in here, I am one to fix and keep, and keep long enough to see that I got so many years/km out of something - so money and time well spent.

No longer amazes me when a mate does a sevice on a car to find a litre or less oil come out of the sump - often on fairly new cars under ten years old and coz it has been working a little harder and not much left to share the dirt that one litre is pretty bloody dirty too.
Many customers do not want to fix or attend to minor preventative maintenace things because they are gonna sell it .... leaving problem and cost to next poor bastard :(

i always service my cars which is why it is a shame when i you buy second hand the previous owner has not. i will be keeping the car for sometime as i will not be able to upgrade anytime soon

Thunder another engine to drop in is probably cheaper than fixing your current one if the damage is internal. My engine is the same with its stuffed oil rings and a few seals..

That's what happened to me with my Forester..
Half the stuff in my foz has been replaced already. lol

as Taza says it is easier to drop a low km motor in than repair one thats got internal damage.

they start at around 500 dollars on ebay for a long block (complete engine no acessories)

Having pulled down more roo ted engines than built, one of my first engine inspections is to stick a finger in and deep into the oil fill cap and scrape around a bit, even just a look under the cap - if I see the black crusty carbon crud, or get it under my fingernail - instant rejection coz it has been subjected to extended service intervals, or cooked or run on not much oil or all three ...

That's sucks mate! Always happens when you're just about to catch a break!

I hope it's a cheap, easy fix that lasts you much, much longer than this engine did. I find it strange myself.

Cheers

yes strange indeed but sh*t happens.

had a look today at this stage it appears it could be valve issues as in a valve hitting a piston. the motor could be salvaged but wont know until i pull it apart over the next week or so.

in so rush because i cant afford to fix it no matter whats wrong with it at this stage in time

well just returned from the machanic and the two rear cylinders are stuffed, unsure why but not worth finding out. cheaper and easier to replace with another engine

well some good news for once.
have got an engine! from a the wreckers $550 swap over good price i thought, has had compression test etc so all good. picking it up today then hopefully the car gets started towards the end of next week or early the week after. replacing the clutch at the same time and getting my broken rear strut replaced as well.
