EJ16 ever push AWD?

Not really, the factory Y pipes used on that engine are almost equal length. It wont sound like a normal in-line 4 cylinder, but it wont have the "blub dub blub dub" noise either.

If I was looking at the fuel efficiency for a conversion then it would probably be an EJ 20 single cam sort the gearing and all the standard mods like a good exhaust,torque allows lower revs and that equates in a light vehicle to economy,hence the reason for the 3 series BMW variant 325E,not powerfull but torquey and better economy with tall gearing and a detuned larger engine.

EJ 20 with gearing would give better fuel economy with more torque and less revs than a smaller higher revving engine.
