It gets my blood boiling when people say the Suby doesn't have the ground clearance, forchrissake, 200mm is 10mm less than a LC100 Landcruiser, so where is the problem with ground clearance?

i think thats one of the main reasons i own a subi 4wd, to show those ****s who drive big 4x4's how its done. I think on just about every trip the wa crew have been on we have impressed many many people.

We have the best of both worlds, economical cars on-road, but also very capable off-road..

Hey all,
Maybe we should organise a group trip with a bunch of non-believers that subis are capable 4wds. We may have to take things slower or change how we approach things but i think thats all a part of 4wding. It also helps the environment to a certain degree - taking it easy can reduce erosion etc from 4wding.

I really think 4wding in subarus is the best fun, especially the looks of some people in larger 4wds when they see the subi to the work even with a car load of people...

And i wonder how many of these people run a standard out of the factory 4wd anyway? I bet there's not too many of them out there that go to these places. I respect peoples choice of 4wd, but some of their 4wding styles i do not respect or agree with.

So true ("don't knock it, if you havn't tried it). I've never been 4wding with another big 4wd so can't back up the other statement, but i'm sure someone here on the board has experience to back it up.

The other week at the pines there was a hill that was a reasonable size, my subi and a mates toyota tercel got to the top (just) so tried to hit with a gemini. Got it bogged fairly badly and could not get it out with the subi (not enough weight to snatch it), a 80 series cruiser came to the rescue after a hyundai terecan got bogged trying to recover the gemini.

The cruiser then proceeded to hit the same hill at like 80kph, got about half way up and basically came to a standstill. The tercel and the subi drove right past him, he felt a little cut seeing two stock cars drive past his lifted cruiser fitted with 35" tyres :)

These people with so-called real 4WD have got no idea they bye there car for $30000 spend $5000 on suspension $2000 on tyres $1000 on diff locks $2000 on bullbars and rollbars $1300 on winches and any other extras they can think of.

Then go to the servo and put $120 of diesel in the tank and go out and play for the day, Driving on the tracks like there on a road doesn't take much effort or thought.

They break something cost them $500+ to fix.

We go out for the day $25 in petrol we break something go to the wreckers cost $20 and have more fun in our $2500 car dosn't make sense!!!

A few years back, wheels or motor magazine (can't remember which) took a porsche across the simpson, no, not the Cayenne, a Carrera!!! Sure it did have a lift kit and more suitable tyres, but still no different to an Outback. Would love to have seen the rooster tails as it crested the dunes :P

To add my 10cents view, no matter what car you drive in if you have no idea on how to drive it you will come unstuck. The great thing on the Suby is that it is quite capable in standard from but once you lift it a bit and add some bigger tyres it becomes a totally different car in terms of ability.

I mourn the days of $25 in petrol yarney.. i filled up for $60 last night. But total agreement to all your other figures though :)

baja bugs and subies are the way to go i recon. 1 they are lighter and 2 more fun, 3 hell cheaper.
i got a bug which i'm converting into a baja. more work than a lift kit in a subie but hell the experiance is just that much more fun. great way to get 4x4s lift there fingers when you climb past them.

Patrol drivers rag on Cruiser drivers, and Land Rover drivers, and and and ........
they all hang it on each other, until something else comes along to stir them up.
Hanging the preverbial on Subarus is just something the idiots can all bandy together on. you'd think they would move on to all the real "pretend" soft roaders out there. A suby ain't pretending to be something its not.
A competent off roader will always respect the same, regardless of the vehicle. If not, just show them up.
Just a pity that they think a 2 tonne truck with a lift and mega tyres make them the only thing out there......

A month or two ago my brother took his landrover out to the powerlines with a bunch of other landrover guys from the AULRO forum (which seems quite similar to this one), and I was quite amused to hear that they had trouble in sections where most of the subarus I saw on the BBQ day had no trouble at all!


I suggested a combined trip in the WA section, but apparantly it's been tried before in Perth and the "real" 4wd club chickened out. :p

I did a trip with the Perth-4x4 trip, I was the only Subaru. By all accounts they were very impressed with my wagon's abilities but unfortunately it all went pear shaped and I no doubt ended up re-inforcing their "subaru's are weak and can't go offroad" mentality.
I was unlucky and sheered a ball joint in half. Spent quite a while making a bush-mechanic fix then had to severely limp the rest of the way.

We've been out another time with the Perth-4x4 group in numbers, I think there were 6 ot 7 of us Suby people in fact. We did the whole length of the track but the Perth-4x4 mob didn't really see much of it as they very rudely left the meet point without telling us and went off in their own group without us. We didn't catch up with them until the end of the track.

Yesterday: 56L for Liberty @ 152.9cpl for ULP = $85.62.

Also it appears that the E10 Unleaded at Shell just got much less worth the price, is only 3cpl less than unleaded now (was 4cpl) and still is 3-3.5% less efficient. Paying 2% less for fuel that gets you 3% less kilometres isn't my idea of good value. :)

I agree - the L series is very capable in any terrain...

I mentioned it on another forum but I went to the top of the smowy mountains right up into Charlottes Pass and up to the weather station(used the trails as I think the rip off that is the "tube" is wrong when I pay my annual fee to go into the national parks!!). I could just make out the tops of the road posts and I was ploughing through the snow(30-40 cm most of the way. Cam across a Patrol - lo and behold it was a police vehicle stuck in the snow...went around him and pulled him out. As I was doing this the ranger troopy had caught up and decided the soob would make a good snow plough. All the way to the top and down the other side.

The police officer was very embarrassed and suffered all kinds of jibbing from the ranger. I was on Pirelli P400 M+S(bad choice apparently according to the ranger - he too ate humble pie...)but now I do it a bit smarter with Toyo 710's. The only issue I had was the snow was forced into the engine bay like a sausage machine due to the front air dam...had to stop every time I heard the fan hitting on ice...lolol)

All I can say is just smile and nod at the non-believers...proof is in the pudding and dont let them tell you otherwise!!
