Forester GT's

Hi all,

i know there isnt a HEAP of knowledge about foresters on these boards, but did the 2.0L GT turbo forester ever come in dual range manual? Im looking around the 2000 models, maybe slightly newer.

any other info i need to know about them? and offroad capabilities?

Dual range was not an option.

A lot of the Foresters we used to see at the wreckers were rolled. For some reason they tend to fall over more so than any of the other Subaru range.

Pretty much, although not exact, the same suspension as an Outback. They are a very popular choice for Subaru offroaders. They are noisier inside than an Outback.

The B pillar can also cause issues with comfort. Quite a few people I know have whinged about the B pillar being right at your arm rather than just behind it. It really only becomes an issue if you like to drive with your arm resting on the window sill.

I recall that turbo'ed forresters had single range, the N/A had dual range.. I could be wrong..
I've test driven Forrester before (borrowed for weekend) and I didnt like it as I like more of "car" style which was Liberty/Outback and I didnt like the arm rests that forresters had.. Thats my opinion...
I think if you lift more on Outback or Liberty to same height as Forrester would be way to go... that is my opinion... I respect your opinion.

No, that is correct. There seems to be a policy of not putting a d/r behind any turbo Subaru.

I was looking at a 00 gt foz after i sold my legacy gt,still wanted a turbo but in a newer car.
Drove 1,it was a manual,drove a 2.5 lib wgn the next day and ended up buying the lib.
It had no power,waiting for turbo to kick in and never came.
They of course can be made to go faster but i wasn't prepared to spend the $$ on top .

A lot of people mistakenly think that the Forester has more clearance than an Outback. Truth be told they are exactly the same height from the factory. They look higher because of the "4wd" look but that is where the difference ends.

The GT Forester has around 165kw.
The XT Forester has around 121-122kw
The Outback 2.5 come sin at 127-128kw
Then the Outback H6 is 180kw. It would be the pick of the bunch.

Where did you get those figures Brett? AFAIK according to my sources (brochure for each model) it is more like this:

GT Forester (2.0T): 130kW
early XT Forester (2.5T): 155kW @ 5600rpm & 320Nm @ 3600rpm
later XT Forester (2.5T): 169kW @ 5600rpm & 320Nm @ 3600rpm
early X & XS Forester (2.5L) 112kW @ 5600rpm & 223Nm @ 3600rpm
later X & XS Forester (2.5L) 121kW @ 5600rpm & 226Nm @ 4400rpm
Early Outback (EJ25): 115kW
Early Outback H6: 154kW
Outback 2.5i (MY04-07): 121kW @ 5600rpm & 226Nm @ 4400rpm
Outback 3.0R (MY04-07) : 180kW @ 6600rpm & 297Nm @ 4200rpm

From 2006 it appears that NA Outbacks didn't have D/R.

Brett, sorry to say mate but the current XT Forester is indeed:

well im one that can say i throughly enjoyed off roading my GT Forrester
up-grades,2'' lift,td05,3''exhaust,
areas,double island,coboolture shire forestry,rover park NSW,private property kingaroy,chinchilla,
had no probs with clearance or power

Pete, I didn't know the exact number. That is why I put around 165kw

I am not saying they are a bad car in any way. Quite the opposite. Excellent car actually. Just saying that they aren't more offroad clearance wise. They do have a tendency to fall over for some reason when compared to Outbacks.

I'd say the falling over problem would be because of a higher COG compare with the OB. It could also be the difference in the wheelbase figures between the 2 of them too, the Forester is smaller.

I just did a trip to Melbourne and back for 8.17 L/100K, I also recorded my best ever figure of 7.75 L/100K during the trip.

If you use it as a 4wd yes it will last. If you use it as a drag car then it won't last very long.

heard the same thing, was looking at the forester GT for my dad and thay only had the d/r in the NA,
Would have been nicer to have put the d/r box in the turbo... can see that doing rather well.
