Other way round you're not (read 'Mechanical failure exclusion' or 'Damage From Mechanical Failure' in your policy)
for example
Your ball joint fails putting you into a tree, causing much panel damage - ie the accident was the direct result of mechanical failure.
So instead, you loose control, resulting a collision with a tree, whereby the ball joint is damaged, as are the panels...
