Guess the mystery item...

Post by Silverbullet » Sun Dec 28, 2014 12:24 pm

Was playing around with some parts on the wagon, cleaning up to re-install when I came across this little doo-hickey. Never seen a thing like it, whoever guesses what it is and where it came from gets...oh I dunno major bragging rights :p

looks like the cabin fan speed resistors if I had to guess.

Either that or the flux capacitor :)

I was going to say a voltage regulator of some sort with its cover removed, but the flux capacitor sounds way better.

Well I guess Doug gets it :p

Have to admit I didn't even know what it was, couldn't find it in my FSM. Such a strange place to put it, it's bolted so the coils are inside the heater/fan box...for cooling?

Each spring/coil has a different resistance for each fan speed 1-3. Has to be in an air flow as they get very hot. Do not (says the voice of reason by way of experience/insanity) hook it up and turn the blower on, as you will fry the thermal link and be soldering it as Taza has described.

Yep I know it but was unsure what it actually did other than glow dangerously red in the heater fan unit. Removed it and has been sitting on the dog's house on the verandah ever since.

Does it now keep the dog warm at night?
Do you not have a blower in your car now?

Haha good one. :). No. Dog now sleeps inside. 11 years old.

It's from a previous vehicle. Not sure which one. Had a touring wagon, 2 L series and now a Foz and a Brumby. I'll go and have a look sometime.

Really surprised to see it glow red and thought it best removed. Not sure if it was supposed to do it. Wasn't keen on a cabin fire.
Owned a Vanguard wagon once that had an under bonnet fire. That was enough.:(

Can't be a flux capacitor Jules.. those coils aren't joined in a Y figuration :)
