forester venting AC gas

Post by spike » Mon May 14, 2012 6:51 pm

ok i think i know the problem but want to know whats going on.

Old mans car has a slight problem, mostly upon start up theres a hiss (we figured it was just the belts so didnt bother, its that sort of noise) but then came summer and the Air Con didnt get cold.

Had it checked and told it had run out of refigerant, had it refilled (125$ at mates rates, made me laugh cause i payed 65 as a special from somone else) start it up hiss, all the gas gone again.

anyone else had this problem? know where to start to fix it?

I'd check all the joints in the system first. There's usually a die put in with the refrigerant so if it leaks you can track down where it's leaking from.

After this you can fix the issue, re-gas and go from there.

Must Auto Sparkies that recharge A/C systems will use the die unless you are getting 'special' mates rates and he leaves it out :(

How long ago did you have it refilled? did it come with a warranty period?

I find that you need to run the A/C even in winter (works well with heat to defog front screens) otherwise the seals become dry and leak out.
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

hmm i didnt think of that. But then again its only on start up, not all the time.
We also keep the switch on auto in the 06 forrester. you can tell i dont ask for help much =P

ill have a look at the gasses, first time it happened was with original gas about 4 years after but it dumped it slowly just a second at a time. This time it a week after having it regassed it dumped the lot.
