copper head gaskets?

Post by nncoolg » Sun Jan 22, 2012 5:19 pm

Just wondering if anyone has used copper head gaskets on the EA's? with no one making metal head gaskets, maybe getting some copper ones made may be an option...
I have never used them before and I'd be interested in getting some feedback...

Not on EA's but on many others and find unless you o'ring and groove them, you don't really get the full benefits of the sealing. Also recommend Hylomar

was searching copper head gaskets last night with hughybabes username as he had some made up by another members contact back in 04 or 05 for his dual port EA81.

Have since read/heard that can't just use copper sheet and laser cut, some talk of heat treating them...

also machine shop owner telling me about a mates drag car with copper head gaskets, when not in season develops leaks requiring the old black block sealer that smells like soap and is not available freely, to seal it up.
Is there still an Oz gasket company Payen ? with technical help line?

Any particular reason why you want to use copper gaskets ?
The issue is that they don't compress so don't seal water and oil in long term . The heads and block cases surfaces have to be exactly flat and square for them or MLS (multi layer shim) gaskets to work reliably .
I had genuine XT4 head gaskets sent out from Japan and not had any problems whatsoever . If I'd intended to use high boost in an EA82 I would have had O ring grooves machined into th heads faces and put wire rings into that clamp up on the outer edges of the fire rings . These help support them so they don't move and leak .
