well for a MT in 98 OBW, it was a bit tricky.
purchased a 17mm open end spanner from the cheap box at a hardware store for $1 and cut it in half. The spanner face still needs some grinding down a bit.
IIRC, pulled the surround for the shifter in the cabin to access or did I do it from underneath...been a while.

VSS replacement cost $120 used, so hardly someone will have a spare I guess. They are ridiculously expensive yet fragile it seems.

There is about a 400Ohm coil internally, however what breaks internally is
mechanical.

Is it 2 or 3 pin unit?

They are a little tricky to get out but like fredsub said, find a cheap thin 17mm ring spanner will do the trick.

I hope it's not this but the other thing I've found is that the drive cog inside the box sometimes gets stripped.. really hope for your sake this is not the case.
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.
