3.8 V6 into brumby? Is it possible

Post by Brumby91 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 1:14 am

What do you think? Is it possible? If an adapter plate could be manufactured do you think it would work?

I know it's out there , but hey what if????

Don't worry about the nay sayers - give it a go! Just a trial fit by dropping it in the engine bay will give you clearer idea of yay or nay

you can try it but be prepared to re-engineer the complete front end of the car to stop it from being twisted off completely. you would probably loose 4WD as well because you would need the box that the motor came with.

Its possible. I have seen a 3.5 rover motor in one with four wheel drive.

not that long - no longer than an EG33 which I belive has been put in a Brumby before.

certainly not wide - especially compared to a boxer engine.

heavy - definitely

god help the gearbox - depends on which box - an EJ auto would probably work well.

I put a V6 and auto into my Mitsubishi Starwagon 4WD van a few years back - made for an awesome conversion. Heaps more power and torque than the standard 2.4l 4 cyl and it used LESS fuel (I guess because it wasn't working as hard??)

Definitely doable but as Alex said - an EJ20T would poo all over it for power, economy and refinement. Even an EJ25 would probably eat it for breakfast.

If you were really keen to do this without the use of a hilux chassis or some other 4wd of the like, look into mating the gearbox with a transfer case, lift it 6 inches or so and use a rear diff up front and rear like a conventional 4wd.

This will allow you to do some funky things like move the engine further back for better weight distribution etc.

The only thing that would make this worth doing is the torque of the V6 when offroad IMO. That said I've not dropped a V6 into a brumby but would imagine if it was a circa 2000 unit it would go like shit off a shovel - my wife's VT gets up and boogies when you want it to and gets pretty good economy when cruising so dropping it into a brumby I don't see why this performance or better wouldn't apply. Torque twisting of the body would be an issue though.

Cheers

A VS V6 ecotec motor makes roughly 147kw, exactly the same as early WRX EJ20G.

Why bother going to all the hassle of making a big, useless motor fit into a space where a much better designed motor will fit with very little work.
