Which Outback?
Hello you all. I am selling my large and rustic but great LR and looking for something more comfortable for my wife and I.
I have a lot of regards for the Subaru vehicles and is high on my list.
I have a look the 2005 Subaru Outback 4GEN MY05 Premium Pack AWD and is very impressive.
I would like to know if the 2004 models is the same vehicle or different specs and also which is the most reliable engine of the 2. I prefer economy or not go over 12lt per 100 if it is possible.
Also, what will be your maximum choice of km in the clock for a vehicle not over $ 17000?
Your inputs are appreciated

no new subi will go over 12l per 100.
my old man has a 3.0l 6cylinder liberty (gen4) and gets 9-10l/100km, id anticipate the 2.5l 4cylinder being even less.
the 3.0l is practically bulletproof, the 2.5 is still an awesome motor (havent heard of any issues)
as for the other questions, research into the market will probably answer your queries.

Thank you Alex for your reply.
What I mean by "Also, what will be your maximum choice of km in the clock for a vehicle not over $ 17000?" is how many Km will be aceptable for a reliable vehicle, 175000 km is to much? about 120000 will be good?
I asking because I do not know after how many km the car will be need a major and costly service.
Cheers

You probably wont get a 2005 Outback for less than 17,000. Maybe late 03 or 04. The 2.5l is a good engine and so is the 3.0L H6. You can only get the H6 in an auto though. Anything upto 200,000km will be fine and still last may more years. but if it has near or around the 200k mark make sure its already had its timing belt and big service done. Around 150,000km or less isnt an issue. My Forester has 150k on her, shes 10years old and has a 2.0l engine and going as strong as ever.

Properly serviced and I mean coolant sparks wets headgasket issues all dealt with and definately idlers and tensioners done with cam belt at 200 000 klm then no problems
We service cars with 500 000 klms plus on them and still going strong ( just need the usual perishable items replaced as required )
Awesome vehicles IMHO ( but I am biased

Thank you guys for the inputs, I used to drive more than 30000 km a year but now I only do about 8000 km so the Suba it is going to last long time.
A 2002/03 Outback in good condition is as good as 2004/05 vehicle or there are important improvement on the later models?
I asking this question because in some cars the improvements are dramatic and justify to expend extra money but if with the Outback it is not the case then I will be happy with an early model in good condition.
Thanks again for the inputs I am learning and cannot aford to make a big mistake.

They are pretty similar between the models, engine and drivetrain wise. A mate of mine has a 2003 MY 03 outback with 176k, manual, brand new paint ob due to hail damage and got it for 12k about a month ago. Its a nice car but he did have to spend 2k geting a few things done. Now though its mechanically A1.
What ever you choose just keep up the services, dont skip them and she will last 300+k.
I have done just over 30,000km in my Forester over the past year and my most costly expense would be petrol.
Anyway let us know what you end up with.
