Forester Questions

Post by Corax » Sun Oct 10, 2010 11:38 pm

Hey Suba-Dudes,

Got a couple of quick Foz questions in relation to the 99GT.

1. Was wondering why the GT didn't come with cruise control? Sure has every other bell and whistle.
2. Is it possible to get cruise control installed?Or is it cost prohibitive?
3. Was planning to replace the panal filter with a high flow one and was wondering which brand/model to use? Have read that some filters can stuff up the air flow meter if they are to oily.
4. Occasionally the 'check engine' light comes on. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it ie wont come on for 3-4 drives at all then it will come on if you hit a bump, or turn, or accelerate hard. Only stays on for a few seconds usually or until you hit the next bump. Loose wire?
5. Was thinking of getting a bonnet protector for it but was told by the subaru guy that the protector messes with the airflow that goes to the bonnet scoop. Myth or fact?

Thats all for now guys, thanks for any input:)

Cheers,
Corax.

1. Dunno.
2. Other Foresters of that age had cruise control, so you could get genuine bits from a wrecker and put them in, or get a generic aftermarket kit from Supercheap etc (or even KMart, I've heard) for about $200. Someone here was wrecking a forester recently - might be worth a search.
3. The only reason to replace a paper filter with a fancy one is the lifetime warranty and the fact they can be washed and reused.
4. Plug in a code reading gadget or connect the diagnostic plugs and count the light flashes to find out where the problem is.
5. Hmm. Possible. Sticky tape a few lengths of wool to the bonnet and see what they do when you go for a drive. Grab some stiff cardboard\plastic\sheetmetal and mock up a bonnet protector. Go for another drive and see what the wool does.

There will be 2 little black single pin plugs under the dash near the steering column, with ignition off plug them together then turn the ignition on and count the flashes from your check engine light IE three long dashes followed by two short dashes repeatedly giving you fault code 32 would mean there was a problem with your oxygen sensor, if no flashes no problem, it will store the flashes until cleared which you can do after fixing the problem by disconnecting the battery for 20 - 30min, you can google the codes, if it comes up with AFM...23 from memory spray it with contact cleaner "nothing else"
Buy a HKS foam flat panel filter.
Aftermarket cruise is available, I've ripped it off a couple of WRX's
