AWD internals into D/R box - EA82 boxes?

I have seen how internals from an EJ type gearbox can be fitted into EA type gearboxes, and L series low range gearing can be fitted to the EJ type boxes.
What I am wondering is if I can fit some of the internals out of an AWD EA box into a D/R EA box to make up a D/R AWD box?
Both boxes are 5pd manuals.

Simple answer is yes it can. The difficulty comes in with the gearbox crossmember and the shifter/tailshaft as they need to be shortened from memory...

Just make sure you leave the speedo gear to what you've got now, this way your speedo will be stock accurate with the same diff ratio you have in there now...

Also check out the threads in the conversions section, there's a couple of stickys in there that would be a good read for you.

I just remembered the other problem for this conversion would be fitting the L series low range in and fabricating the dedent ball that retains the gear selection with the high and low range settings...

is someone missing something here??

Is SuBeaRoo asking if a single range EA82 style AWD box internals can be used in an EA82 DR box - think he is just trying to gain 4L in an AWD EA box, not using any EJ box stuff. If that is the case no need to consider the crossmember and tailshaft stuff. And all the other stuff I don't know either .....

Re-read the first post... I originally read it as being the good ol' EJ into EA casing AWD box build question. If this is not the case then read on:

If you have a single range L series AWD gearbox with lockable centre diff and a dual range Part Time 4wd gearbox (PT4wd) I believe you can build a dual range L series AWD gearbox with lockable centre - Disco did this and he'd be the one to talk to about it.

I'd make sure you've got an AWD gearbox first by cracking open the flat plate on top of the rear of the gearbox to make sure there's a centre diff in there and NOT a rear drive engaging mechanism. This is the first trick to buying an L series AWD gearbox.

I believe the lever to engage the rear end in the single range 4wd box is high up on the side of the rear housing at the back driver's side of the gearbox. I could be wrong on the driver's side bit...
The AWD with locking centre has the same sort of lever for locking the centre diff, but it is pivoted from about halfway up the side of the rear casing on the same side as the PT4wd single range box.

I hope all of this makes some sense!

And yep, I'm hoping to build a D/R AWD 5 speed manual with lockable centre diff. To suit EA82T and L series.
Wagon currently has S/R AWD 5 speed with diff lock. I also have a dual range PT4WD box (check it out - I learnt a new term! :-D ).
I'd have to have it off the road while I'm attempting to do this and not wreck the original AWD in case I fail and still need it.

Hey Tim, Let us know if you do this (start a post with your progress) as I'm thinking of doing the same to my FT4WD box that has diff lock :) I'm under the impression that it would be a fairly easy swap over but was hoping someone else had already done it.

Disco has done it. I'm not sure if it was a DIY or a professional. I would say, without meaning offence to disco that he had someone else do the work.

It is possible though.

And SuBearRoo, I'm still unsure as to wether you have an AWD gearbox in the L or the Single range 4wd gearbox... What year is your subi and do you know for sure that the gearbox has been swapped in?

I'm pretty certain that the box came out of an RX, along with the engine.
Doesn't have the RX rear diff unfortunately, (no LSD), but does have rear discs.
It is an '89 L series, originally had PT4WD box.
As far as I know it is a S/R, (constant) AWD, 5 speed manual box.
Is it possible that it might be something else?

ps - I don't expect to try this until the end of the year. I will do a progress post to let you know how I'm going, it just might be after I finish, I don't wanna embarrass myself with public failure! ;)
