I have a 1998 Legacy Outback with stock 15" wheels. I am looking to replace the tires with some slightly taller and wider BFGoodrich radials. Does any one know if 215 70's or 225 70's would fit?
Current tire size is 205 70.
I'm not looking to make any modifications. I am just interested in what size tires I can fit on this car with everything else being stock.
I have always put taller wider BF Goodrich radial tires on every vehicle I have owned. I like the look and smoother ride. Plus they always seem to do better in the snow. I don't drive alot of "twisties", so I'm not interested in wide low profiles.
New tire size on 98 Legacy Outback
215/70R15 is around 15mm taller and will fit okay. Spare might be a bit tight in the well, but if you stow it partially deflated (10 psi) it should fit. Obviously you'll need to carry a compressor to reinflate the spare if you need to use it.
225/70R15 is around 30mm taller and may rub on front mudflaps and inner guard on full lock / compression. Remove the mudflaps (if fitted), and tap the inner guard with a 4 pound hammer to stop the rubbing from occurring.
Size does vary between tyre brands and models so you'd really need to find a friendly tyre shop and compare the rubber side by side.
